Re: Music in Islam
Music has not specifically or directly prohibited in Quran. There was no musician companion of our Prophet Mohammad (SAW).
Quran discourages any excess of meaningless activities.
There are some ahadees which will shortly be quoted by some our friends here pretty soon.
To me Music is grey area of Islamic code of conduct . I would enjoy serene, non vulgar, non provocative music that too with modesty , not on 24x7x365 basis. Just during those hours in which I am busy with some stressfull , productic and non productive activities. For example when I am balancing my check books or sorting and taking care of my mail or doing my taxes or doing gupshup on GS , working in my garden.
I would stay away from provocative and vulgar music.
Fair enough. I do the same, but what would you say about the sound of musical instruments?
If it were such a good thing, the prophet (saw) would have listened to it at least once in life or encouraged others to do so, as music DID exist in that time. Life is too short to practice anything which existed in times of the Prophet (saw) and he didn't encourage it.
There are so many hadiths quoted in the topics on music which were previously discussed on this forum. Search would inshaAllah help.
Re: Music in Islam
^Absolutely agree on that. Music can serve as a diversion from the things muslims should be focusing on.
All forms of music are not prohibited. Music was used for the entertainment purpose in Arabia even during the times of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), though only women-folk sang at wedding.
I believe the issue of right vs. wrong comes down to the type of music that is being listened to. By the standard of virtue, most of the music today would be considered haram for it talks of drug abuse, sex, deception, lying, and so on...
If i recall correctly, there are certain musical instruments that are discouraged to use. Perhaps someone with more knowledge on this can shed light on it.

So you don't listen to music but you have a dancing avatar , what's up with that Teggy the great ? Is dancing allowed ?
Re: Music in Islam
I didn't say i don't listen to music. I enjoy music. I'm telling you what the Islamic view of the music may be. I talk to females who don't wear a veil. I have non-muslim colleagues who drink. I often pity myself for not being a complete muslim...I watch movies that sometimes have vulgar language and profanity, sometimes the anger overtakes me and i can't shake the devil,........
Should i keep going...?

Sahih al-Bukhari recorded,
Narrated 'Urwa on the authority of 'Aisha: On the days of Mina, (11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah) Abu Bakr came to her while two young girls were beating the tambourine and the Prophet was lying covered with his clothes. Abu Bakr scolded them and the Prophet uncovered his face and said to Abu Bakr, "Leave them, for these days are the days of 'Id and the days of Mina." 'Aisha further said, "Once the Prophet was screening me and I was watching the display of black slaves in the Mosque and ('Umar) scolded them. The Prophet said, 'Leave them. O Bani Arfida! (carry on), you are safe (protected)'."
Sahih Muslim recorded,
Volume 2, Book 15, Number 103.
'A'isha reported: The Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) came (in my apartment) while there were two girls with me singing the song of the Battle of Bu'ath. He lay down on the bed and turned away his face. Then came Abu Bakr and he scolded me and said: Oh! this musical instrument of the devil in the house of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)! The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) turned towards him and said: Leave them alone. And when he (the Holy Prophet) became unattentive, I hinted them and they went out, and it was the day of 'Id and negroes were playing with shields and spears. (I do not remember) whether I asked the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) or whether he said to me if I desired to see (that sport). I said: Yes. I stood behind him with his face parallel to my face, and he said: O Banu Arfada, be busy (in your sports) till I was satiated. He said (to me): Is that enough? I said: Yes. Upon this he asked me to go. Book 004, Number 1942.
These AHadees clearly allows certain kind of singing that too by girls. The age of girls is not mentioned. But I will not say that (naoozubillah) Rasool(SAW) was enjoying a mujra. Looking at his life and teachings it is out of question that he would listen to some vulgar or provocative music he was listening to some soothing or heart warming music and singing.
Now the following two ahadees contradict what is mentioned in the above two. But if you look closely the singing is not being prohibited in the following first hadees but musical instruments are. What Kind of logic is that if all the musical instruments are prohibited in the following hadees then the above two ahadees negate it because tambourine is also a musical instrument so either the above two ahadees are wrong on the two below are.
The second hadees below says " Singing produces hypocrisy in the heart " If you think this hadees is not prohibiting music or singing , it is telling about something which will result due to listening to the music or singing. *
*Now my question is if music and singing produce hypocrisy then what about nasheed/naat/Hamd a Bari Talla they are bad too ? What kind of hypocrisy will they create.
Hadith - Bukhari 7:494
Narrated Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks, and the use of musical instruments as lawful. And (from them), there will be some who will stay near the side of a mountain, and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and Allah will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection."
Hadith - Sunan of Abu Dawood, #4909, Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud
Salam ibn Miskin, quoting an old man who witnessed AbuWa'il in a wedding feast, said: They began to play, amuse and sing. He united the support of his hand round his knees that were drawn up, and said: I heard Abdullah (ibn Mas'ud) say: I heard the apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Singing produces hypocrisy in the heart.
Based on above discussion my stance is that not all music and singing is prohibited like not all kind of meat eating is prohibited. There are certain qualification for the meat you can eat , so there are certain kind of qualifications for the kind of music and singing you can listen to.
Allah knows the best.
Re: Music in Islam
Can we live without music?
I guess we can ..
so why such a behes if its haram or not ..

Re: Music in Islam
it dependz on the kind of music ur listening 2
What Muslims need to understand is that every civilization builds upon the one before it and there is no shame in this. When fundamental Muslims appose music, poetry, etc this attitude is a threat to human civilization.
Anybody who opposes the beauty of human expression is against civilization whether he is Hindu, Muslim, Jew or whatever. This attitude form many Muslims only strengthens the HISTORICAL FACT that Muslims are a bunch of uncivilized enemies of culture and the arts since the fall of the OTTOMON EMPIRE. All religious movements go through this phase but they grow out of it. The problem with Muslims is that they are stuck in this phase and because of this fact has become a danger to civilization everywhere.
seriously, too many potential extremists on this site.

Is it just me, or does this forum have discussions on the same topics over and over again...
Re: Music in Islam
music is food for soul. According to Hinduism the universe was created with a primordial hum (the resonance of the AUM) and that is why when somebody hears a right kind of music, played without mistakes, it can instantaneously calm and soothe ones mind by sub-consciously connecting the listener to the whole universal truth.
Or in simpler terms, good music makes you feel good without decadence or harming others
Noisy, loud, obnoxious, music which generates hyper activity of any kind is surely not only injurious to the mind and soul but that is also the kind of music which is forbidden in Islam (as per my belief).
Serene, tranquilizing music which generates feelings of welll being, love and peace is not only a kind of therapy of those who need but is also what is NOT forbidden in Islam.
There are various kinds of music creations. It is upto you what you chose to listen to and what your preference is. Obviously if you chose to listen to bad music (which I call noise) for long hours of your precious time during the day or make it an addiction, it will only impair your nervous system (slowly without your knowledge) and harming your faith too.
Most muslims do not make an effort to understand the deeper meaning for any teaching of Quran. They're just like 'lakeer ke fakeer'... what they hear from some mullah and refuse to use their own good brain God gave them for the same purpose. They do not question why. They just close their eyes and think it is a SIN to question or ponder to find the real meaning, purpose and reasons.
