Justice has prevailed say Nadeem, Taurani

Bollywood music director Nadeem Akhtar Saifi, who successfully fought his extradition to India to stand trial in the Gulshan Kumar murder case, today said the trial court’s rejection of the conspiracy charge against 19 accused in the case was a “slap on the face of the Mumbai police officers.”
Nadeem, who is currently based in London, said “I have been unnecessarily dragged into it but thank God, justice has prevailed.”
The trial court’s rejection of the conspiracy charge is a “slap on the face of the Mumbai police officers who were working overtime to persecute innocent people”, he said.
He listed the names of the police officers and the public prosecutor who he claimed were “communally biased.”
Asked whether he would be returning to Mumbai, Nadeem said “If the Government of India invites me honourably then I will consider .”
Nadeem received 920,080 pounds in legal cost after he successfully fought extradition from here by the Indian government.
In the trial court in Mumbai yestserday, sessions judge M L Tahiliyani said the prosecution had failed to prove the conspiracy charge.
“God is great. I am happy that after five years the truth has prevailed”, Ramesh Taurani, director of TIPS Cassettes and prime conspirator in the Gulshan Kumar murder case, said after his acquittal today by a sessions court.
Gulsan Kumar case: Chronology of events
Taurani, who came to the court with his wife and brother, told reporters “My faith in judiciary has all the more increased. I have waited patiently for the verdict because I knew that truth will certainly prevail”. Outside the court, his lawyer Adik Shirodkar said the charges against Taurani were misconceived and right from the beginning of the case there was no evidence against him. In a guarded reaction, brother of Gulshan Kumar, Kishen Kumar said “I have no complaints against the investigating agency because I know police have done their best”.
“There are so many accused. Even owner of an STD booth from where calls were made to conspirators in Dubai is an accused. Hence it becomes difficult to prove the charges against all of them”, he said reacting to the judgement. Kishen, also a witness in this case, said he was also
satisfied with the efforts of the Indian government to extradite prime conspirators from foreign countries. For over two years Indian authorities tried their best but luck was not in their favour, he said.
During the trial, Kishen had deposed before the court saying that there was business rivalry between Gulshan Kumar on one hand and Taurani and Nadeem on the other.
Shravan of the Nadeem-Shravan duo said “I am happy to hear the verdict. After all, the truth has come out. I knew right from the beginning that Nadeem was innocent and would one day be freed from the charges”.
“The judgement is fair because the court has gone into the merits of the case and declared that it was rejecting the conspiracy charge”, Shravan told reporters outside the court. “My heartfelt congratulations to Nadeem. Now I hope he would come here soon and join me in the profession”, the music composer said. Nadeem’s lawyer Majeed Memon said on facts and law there was no case against the music composer because the court had rejected the conspiracy charge. The only charge against Nadeem was that of conspiracy which has not been proved by the prosecution, he told reporters.
There were only two references to Nadeem in the entire case. One was that he attended a conspiracy meeting in Dubai which was attended by the approver and contract killer Abu Salem. The second charge was that he and Taurani had handed over Rs 25 lakh contract money to Abu Salem’s agent in Mumbai to execute the murder.
In both these instances, the court has rejected alleged conspiracy charge. Hence Nadeem has come out of the conspiracy allegation. Asked whether Nadeem would come to India, Memon said “wait and watch. We shall take the next move after consulting him”.
