Karachi, July 6 (ANI): Mushtaq Mohammad, often regarded as Pakistan’s best cricket captain, has revealed in his autobiography “Inside Out” how his team had “doctored the ball” in the Melbourne victory of 1979 when Sarfraz Nawaz claimed 9-86, and that Pakistani cricketers were involved in something akin to match-fixing when they poorly lost to Bangladesh during the 1999 World Cup.
“Whether this game was fixed I don’t know as I’m not a gambling man and neither am I a psychologist able to read faces to see if anyone looks guilty. But after the way we performed I had my doubts as to whether players were involved in something they shouldn’t have been,” the Daily Times quoted Mushtaq as saying.
Although Mushataq doesn’t actually say in the book that fixing took place, but he does cast huge suspicion on the “circumstances and manner of the defeat” and was also surprised at the lack of distress on the player’s faces, at a time when Bangladesh were yet to be handed Test status.
Mushtaq was Pakistan’s coach during the 1999 World Cup.
In the book, the former skipper also tells how the Pakistan team had ‘doctored the ball’ in the Melbourne victory of 1979 when Sarfraz Nawaz claimed 9-86 to help Pakistan beat Australia by seven wickets. Although Sarfraz bowled a remarkable spell, the team “worked on the ball” and gave the seam a lift, the Daily Times quoted him as saying in the book.
Mushtaq’s long-awaited autobiography was launched at a local hotel in Karachi last evening where former cricketers Javed Miandad, Moin Khan and Mudassar Nazar were also present.
Mushtaq played 57 Tests for Pakistan from 1959 to 1979. (ANI)
Re: Mushtaq reveals all in autobiography
What length people will go to sell their books and make money. If he doesn’t have any proof of match fixing he should keep his mouth shut. ![]()
Re: Mushtaq reveals all in autobiography
I am also going to write a book about the match fixing saga, and how our players used to tamper the ball.... anyone want to make advance bookings(purchase)?
Re: Mushtaq reveals all in autobiography
Can I please order 10,000 copies of it.. in advance?
Re: Mushtaq reveals all in autobiography
Exactly!!! If he is doing all this to sell his books then shame on Mushtaq as it’s not going to make a positive impact on Pak cricket in anyway.

Shame on Mushtaq “the greedy attention seeker**”…

Re: Mushtaq reveals all in autobiography
Please include Rashid Latif bakra in that list of attention-seeking shmucks.
Re: Mushtaq reveals all in autobiography
All the respect by playing cricket, has been lost by writing a book on cricket. A very bad deal indeed!
Re: Mushtaq reveals all in autobiography
well just don't blame it on Mushtaq..a lot of players in Pakistan like Rashid Latif,Sikandar Bakht have talked about it much more openly on that issue of match fixing in Pakistan cricket..obviously it was quite a dark and important phase in Pakistan cricket when match fixing stories started to come up and why would'nt he talk about it when he was actually the coach of Pakistan during that time.Hes' obviously not hiding anything ball doctoring went on in Pakistani cricket for a long time untill there were t.v cameras installed everywhere and then Pakistani bowlers could'nt do it.I heard Abdul Qaadir acknoweledge that on t.v once ..so these are things that are well known to those who are linked closely to cricket in Pakistan and everybody interested in cricket has the right to know about it.
Re: Mushtaq reveals all in autobiography
^ Two things, if he is that concerned about these issues why raise them now, why not when it was happening during his playing days? Secondly to say that Pakistanis were doing it, reminds me how they were accused of ball tampering in 1992 and how it was all over the British media. Why because of the reverse swing, it was the biggest crime and cheating affair in cricket's history than. As soon as Gough and some other English bowlers began reverse swing it became art, not cheating, not crime but art. Desi jee there are two sides to each story.
Re: Mushtaq reveals all in autobiography
CHEAP PUBLICITY… to say the least ![]()
Re: Mushtaq reveals all in autobiography
I think it was good that the whole match fixing thing came out in the open. Yes it did bring shame to the country but at least the game got cleaner.
Mushtaq is stupid to have spoken about working the ball. Pretty much everyone used to work the ball in those pre technology days.
Usually papers take things out of context. Let us first read the book before passing judgement on Mushtaq. I seriously doubt if he wrote it so openly but if he did then the guy is not very smart
Re: Mushtaq reveals all in autobiography
One of the West Indian legendary fast bowler (can't remember his name) said that " I don't believe there was any bowler in my days who did not tamper with ball".
Now why do Mushtaq need to highlight this issue right now???is it going to discourage anyone tampering?? Is it going to help Pakistan cricket in anyway????
Re: Mushtaq reveals all in autobiography
^^ It certainly will help his book sale which is the main agenda. A lot of people try to sensationalize things when writting such books to build some hype about it.
