LAHORE, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistan have retained leg spinner Mushtaq Ahmed as a bowling consultant for the one-day series against England.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Shaharyar Khan told Reuters on Sunday that Mushtaq was also on a shortlist of candidates to be appointed assistant coach of the senior team on a long-term basis.

Mushtaq, 35, was recalled for the test series against England after last playing against South Africa in October 2003.

However, the leg spinner, who has taken 185 test and 161 one-day wickets, did not play in any of the three tests with young Danish Kaneria being preferred to him.

Kaneria produced two memorable spells of bowling to engineer wins for Pakistan on the final days of the first and third tests in Multan and Lahore.

“Mushtaq has a good knowledge and understanding of the game and he knows the England players well. We have retained him as bowling consultant for the one-day series to take advantage his expertise,” Shaharyar said.

Mushtaq was due to be released from the team after the test series but was asked to stay back by the board.

“He works well with coach Bob Woolmer and captain Inzamam-ul-Haq and the players. He is one the candidates we are looking at to appoint as assistant coach on long-term basis maybe until the next World Cup in 2007,” Shaharyar added.

The PCB chief said the appointment of the assistant coach should be made before the home series against India early next year. Mushtaq, who has played for English county Sussex for the last two years, has expressed his keenness to work as assistant coach with the senior team.

Unfortunate? Cronyism? Stupid?

Buddies are selected for Pakistan squad, do not get to play cause they were never supposed to be there, now thats not possibe cartel decides to appoint their buddies as a bowler specialist. Leg break bowler with average results, except for his Tableeghi credentials Mushtaq does not have much to boast as a bowling specialist. If anyone deserves it should be some one like Waqar, Wasim`Akram or Aqib Javed who has done a terrific job for the Pak juniors. Mushtaq has spent most of his prime years playing in England, unlike many domestic players usch as Rashid Khan, Aqib who have devoted their lives to domestic cricket, it will be another case of classic cronyism which totally ignores local talent, merit and doing the right thing.

Like many other decisionbs, this board has shown again and again its absolutely gutless performance, totally dependent upon what is popular rather than what is right.

Committee’s views ignored in appointments

LAHORE, Dec 11: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has twice by-passed its ad hoc committee and its own policy, in recent days by appointing Test leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed and Mrs Bending Compton as bowling consultant and physiotherapist of Pakistan men and women teams.

The chairman made the appointment of Mushtaq, despite the fact that the proposal had been rejected by the committee when presented earlier.

To compensate Mushtaq, who remained in wilderness for almost two years, the bowler was included in the Test squad against England, with claims he could be a trump card for Pakistan, but he was not selected for any of the three Test matches, the home team winning series 2-0.

As Mushtaq was the member of the 16-member Test squad, he got all benefits to enjoy the tour and now when he has no chance for ongoing ODIs he was obliged by giving an assignment.

Earlier, chairman Shaharyar M. Khan had appointed Bending Compton as the physiotherapist of national women’s cricket team, preparing for the first Asia Cup to be held in Karachi from the last week of December.

The chairman had issued the letter to Mrs Compton, a day before going to India on Dec 2, without consulting the ad hoc committee.

Mrs Compton is the wife of Grant, the physio of the Pakistan team.

In both cases, the PCB also violated its own policy of not advertising the vacancies, before filling all posts.

This reporter could not get a reply from the official concerned to the question whether the PCB had advertised the post in newspapers.

Shoaib Akhtar, Rana Naved, Abdul Razzaq, Umar Gul, Mohammad Sami could really use Mushtaq Ahmed’s ‘how to do offspin’… that was the missing weapon from their arsenal :k: :jhanda:

When things are going your way, everything you do is acceptable and lauded as another great step. Mushtaq Ahmed has been retained as the 'bowling consultant' for Pakistan, not a whimper is heard from any quarter of Paki cricketing circles. Since Inzi is delivering positive results, nobody is willing to ask serious questions regarding this blatant cronyism displayed by Inzi at the expense of PCB ie Pak cricketing funds.

  • From our correspondent * LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has again accepted a request by captain Inzamam-ul-Haq to appoint leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed as the bowling consultant of the senior team for the home series against India.

A senior Board official confirmed that Mushtaq would continue as bowling consultant on the request of the team management. "We didn’t have time to call an ad-hoc committee meeting to discuss future appointments due to the Eid holidays and other problems. But because the team management made a request we decided to retain Mushtaq as consultant after speaking to the committee members."

Mushtaq, 35, was originally recalled to the Test squad for the series against England in November but didn’t play in any of the matches.

He was dropped for the one-day series against England but retained as a bowling consultant by the Board. But he was released after the series.

The leg-spinner who has a contract with English county Sussex for this year has taken 185 wickets in 52 Tests and 161 in 144 one-dayers. The official said this contract was a big hindrance in the Board appointing him as an assistant coach on a long-term basis.
The official said that a decision on the assistant coach would be taken after the Indian series now.

Mushtaq even before his retention as bowling cosultant was seen working with the players at the nets and was confident he would be get the nod once again.

It is no secret that Inzamam and coach Bob Woolmer are both comfortable with him working with the other players and remaining attached with the team.

"Mushtaq is a very experienced cricketer and knows all these players well. He is a good communicator and they can discuss things with him without any problems. He is a big help which is why we wanted him as a bowling consultant," Inzamam said.

I really would like to know how he (Mushtaq Ahmad) is going to help Rana Naved, Mohammed Sami, Shoaib Akhtar, M Asif, Umar Gul in controlling their overstepping (no-ball), their run up, their action, how to swing/reverse swing etc.

I'm really disappointed in Inzamam, this is clear display of rishtay-daari, bhai-chargi being used to secure position rather than merit.

well if Inzamam wants Mushtaq to be the coach...then let it be. If both Woolmer and Inzamam think he's the right man for the job, then he might be...we dont know how well he gels with players by sitting here. And another thing, he is ** not ** a bowling coach, but an assistant coach, to help out Woolmer and Inzamam, and Woolmer has been requesting an assistant coach for a while now...and if Woome ris comfortable working wih Mushtaq, then I dont see any problem. I was reading on Cricinfo that talks are going on to somehow get Waqar to be a bowling coach...so that tells u that the PCB is looking for a bowling coach.
