Mushraff still involved in country matters?

Russia looks at Pakistan with new eyes
Indrani Bagchi Monday June 22, 2009

A week ago, a visit by Pervez Musharraf, former Pakistan president, to Russia alerted Indian authorities. The visit was facilitated by a private businessman, but India realized quite soon that Musharraf was doing some facilitation of his own, preparing the way for the visit of Pakistan army chief, Ashfaque Kayani today. Musharraf, who remains very much a part of Pakistan’s military establishment reportedly had a very “productive” meeting with Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin.

The upshot of that meeting seems to be that Russia is willing to take another look at a defence relationship with Pakistan. Kayani went off on a short visit to Russia today, where he is to meet defence and foreign ministers and the army chief. The key question is, can this be the turning point in Russia’s defence relationship with Pakistan? If Russia starts selling arms to Pakistan, it will actually be a huge turnaround – in all these decades, Russia is probably the only country that did not sell weapons to Pakistan as India’s chief supplier. Pakistan, though, sourced a lot of Russian-made stuff from Ukraine.

Russia also had historical issues with Pakistan. When the Soviet Union withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989, the defeat was not so much at the hands of the Americans as the Pakistanis. That rankled for a long time. But in recent years, India has been shopping elsewhere for weapons.

Russia is now in the company of the Israelis, French and American weapons suppliers. Besides, New Delhi has now had persistent issues with big ticket acquisitions from Russia. So Russia could be feeling liberated from being a one-woman man with India. In fact, Indian officials have registered that Putin certainly feels there could be a commercial defence relationship with Pakistan. Russia’s other big client is China, and right now, China is also in the business of helping out Pakistan against the Taliban and the target of US calls to “stabilize” Pakistan.

In the meantime, Russia’s near abroad is in danger again, from Islamist militant groups in the Fergana valley (despite Islam Karimov, Uzbekistan cannot get a handle on the IMU, and Uzbek militants have been showing up in Pakistan, fighting alongside the Taliban). The argument therefore, is Pakistan needs to be assisted and supported in its fight against the Taliban because the scourge needs to be tackled in the central Asian states. Given this backdrop, Dmitry Medvedev’s meeting with Asif Ali Zardari in Yekaterinburg during the SCO summit was significant. According to reports, Medvedev promised wholehearted support to Pakistan in its military operation.

The Indian government will be watching very carefully to see what kind of defence supplies end up in Pakistan from Russia. But also what it portends for India’s oldest diplomatic friendship.

Re: Mushraff still involved in country matters?

well i guess if musharaf developed some personal relations over the time with establishment and premiers out of pakistan it cud be put to use if for benefit of pakistan. He was afterall in control of white and grey in pak for almost a decade u know. must have started some brew to boil
Musharaf can be used

Re: Mushraff still involved in country matters?

So what's the problem, is this against the interest of Pakistan .. or Taliban .. whatever Musharraf is doing? sigh

Re: Mushraff still involved in country matters?

^if pakistan is getting cosy with russia it will be an anti US move, you can take that as pro taliban. ie not as likely to follow US's vision

but pakistan has already double crossed the tribal pashtuns of afghanistan and pakistan. there is no rosy end in sight

I hope we can next double cross the punjab taliban as well.

The original post was showing just the usual knee jerk reaction form India.

Don't think Russian weapons or Taliban are the only driving force in the love-hate triangle of Pak-USA-Russia.

The dominating factor is the access to the oil/gas wealth of CIS.

Russia does NOT want Pakistan to be a conduit for this oil/gas. In fact Russia does NOT want ANYONE but Russia (or areas under DIRECT russian control) to be the pathways of pipelines.

Many Ex-presidents including Clinton, or Musharraf etc. are involved in the oil game.

Thus a hurried up tour of Kiyani to Moscowa may be just to deliver a warning that Russia must quit supporting anarchy in Pakistan.

As a return favor Pakistan+NATO can offer Russia a deal where Russian state monopoly (and hence cookie jar for Medyadev and others) will be given development contract for the pipelines.

Tribal Pashtuns are no robots. Why do you want to patornize them as some kind of 5 grader schools kids who can be double crossed?

Tribal Pashtuns are very Pakka about money especially illicit money from drugs, weapons, and kindapping/ransoms.

The history clearly shows that Talibleesi Qoum was the first to double cross Pakistan in the 1990s, when they first invited Pakistani football team and then humiliated Pakistan by shaving these poor players.

Or

Talibleesi Quom became a dirty double crosser when they ditched Pakistani money and started sucking money from Saudi terrorists.

Pakistan on the other hand was waiting at home like faithful husband all the way to 2001, while the Talibleesi woman was having all night all day tangos with Bin Laden and his terrorist goons.

Nothing against you bro!

It is just a request to all, that they must not forget the history. No one double crossed any tribals. It was the tribals who double crossed Pakistan way back in 1990s.

Re: Mushraff still involved in country matters?

Is Pakistan trying to get in the race for a super-power?
