AFIC board to decide on Musharraf’s release - DAWN.COM

ISLAMABAD: A meeting of the medical board of the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) is underway to decide whether to discharge former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf who was admitted there for suffering heart problems on his way to a special court for treason charges earlier on Jan 2, DawnNews reported.

Security was beefed up during the meeting of the AFIC’s medical board. A huge contingent of police and Rangers personnel reached the hospital.

It is speculated that Musharraf will be discharged within 24 hours.

Meanwhile, security has also been tightened at Musharraf’s Chak Shehzad farmhouse. Moreover, police patrolling has also increased in the neighbourhood.

Doctors said Musharraf’s condition has improved from before and that he had undergone physiotherapy. His knee and back pain has also subsided.

Musharraf had been rushed to the AFIC on Jan 2 after he complained of heart problems on way to the special court for treason charges. Aside from the treason allegations, the former army strongman also faces trial over the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, the death of Baloch nationalist leader Akber Bugti, a deadly raid on a radical mosque and the detention of judges.

Re: Musharraf’s treason trial

These traitors also deserve a court-martial for breaching the oath taken at the time of getting commission in the army to not to take part in politics . Mush took the oath of Pakistan but previous three took the oath of loyalty with the British Crown but they also betrayed that and remain loyal with US till life .

Fire breaks out at Pervez Musharraf hospital in Pakistan | NDTV.com

Islamabad: A fire broke out early on Wednesday at the Pakistani hospital where former military ruler Pervez Musharraf was admitted for a heart condition, officials said.

“There was a small fire incident at the hospital, but it was extinguished immediately,” a source at Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology in Rawalpindi told AFP.

Another source confirmed the fire incident was “of a minor nature”.

Officials said the cause was being investigated and may have been started by an electrical short circuit.

Musharraf was taken to hospital last week after falling ill while travelling to a special court considering treason charges against him.

He was diagnosed with coronary artery disease, with his lawyers pleading for him to be allowed to receive treatment abroad.

Musharraf’s lawyer Ahmad Raza Kasuri said that the former president was not affected.

“He is safe as the fire incident happened on another floor,” Kasuri told AFP.

The court has ordered Musharraf to appear in person on Thursday, after considering a medical report on his heart complaint. The case has gripped the nuclear-armed nation for the past fortnight.

Musharraf has yet to appear in person before the specially-convened three-judge tribunal, missing hearings due to security fears and the health scare.

Rumours have circulated for months that a backroom deal would be struck to whisk him overseas to avoid a destabilising clash between the government, which brought the charges, and the powerful armed forces.

Musharraf’s camp says the treason allegations, which relate to his imposition of emergency rule in November 2007, are politically motivated, and his lawyers have challenged the authority of the tribunal.

But the former commando has said he wants to stay and fight the charges.

Aside from the treason allegations, Musharraf also faces trial over the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, the death of a rebel leader, a deadly raid on a radical mosque and the detention of judges.

Re: Musharraf’s treason trial

How to conclude the army does (not) support Musharraf
LAHORE - A debate is going on in the media these days about whether the army is supporting Gen Musharraf in his treason trial or not.
Some people say that Gen Musharraf’s decision to impose emergency on Nov 3, 2007 was his individual act, and whatever the outcome of the trial the army has nothing to do with it. This school of thought says that sentencing of Gen Musharraf will strengthen democracy and in future no COAS will ever dare to violate the Constitution.
The second opinion is that there is already unrest among the rank and file, and the army will not like its former boss humiliated – no matter what his personal character. The subscribers of this view insist that the government is sowing thorns for itself and it may have to reap the same – sooner or later.
Which group’s opinion is weightier and more realistic will be clear only once the army expresses its opinion.
But the army will never issue a statement on any such issue, especially if it is not in line with the government’s thinking. It will only play a behind-the-scene role to get desired results.
Defence Minister Khwaja Asif said in categorical terms recently that the army is not with Gen Musharraf. This may be the viewpoint of the government, not the army’s.
A few days later, Defence Secretary Lt Gen (Retd) Asif Yasin Malik came up with a similar statement. The defence secretary’s statement was mistaken by some media persons as reflective of the army’s opinion. They forgot that the defence secretary was a government employee like other federal secretaries and was supposed to speak for the government, not the army. The army may or may not agree with the opinion of the defence minister or the defence secretary.
If a retired general serving as defence secretary is taken to be representative of the armed forces, then, hypothetically speaking, even a civilian defence secretary like Nargis Sethi would also be speaking for them.
(Not long ago, the then COAS Gen Kayani and ISI chief Gen Pasha had filed statements in court against then prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. Although this caused tremendous embarrassment to the head of government, they did not review their positions in what is known as the Memogate case).
What is more significant is the fact that the army is staying silent on the subject, despite demands by various parties that they clarify their position.
In such a situation we’ll have to go by inferences or examples of other institutions.
Recently, former chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry sought bullet-proof vehicle for himself for security reasons. The government was first reluctant to grant the request. But on intervention by the Islamabad High Court, it offered a 2005 model vehicle, which was not acceptable to the former CJP.
The IHC directed the government to provide the former CJP a new one, or it would order withdrawal of such vehicles provided to all VVIPs.
Was there any justification for such a threatening order? No. It was in fact the judiciary’s support to its former boss.
Another example also comes from the judiciary.
A judge of the Islamabad High Court came to Lahore a few days ago. Near Thokhar, the police halted the traffic, including the judge’s car, to facilitate the motorcade of the grandson of a billionaire to pass uninterrupted.
The Lahore High Court took a suo motu notice of the incident. The reason: a judge was treated like a common mortal.
It would have been more appreciable if the judiciary had ever taken a notice of traffic halted to facilitate the so-called VVIPs – who don’t like to be treated like humans, although under the Constitution all citizens are alike.
The moral: Institutions support their people, no matter whether somebody likes it or not.
These examples should be instructive for those who believe that the army is not with Gen Musharraf.
The government, for reasons best known to its leaders, seems in a hurry this time. It is taking steps which are raising many an eyebrow.
Dismissal of Tariq Malik as NADRA chairman, Rashid Chaudhry as PEMRA chairman and Tahir Mehmud as accountant general were not liked by the general public. And when the Islamabad High Court reinstated Tariq Malik, threats to his daughter forced him to tender resignation. The IHC’s post-resignation verdict that Mr Malik’s appointment was in line with the procedure was like posthumous recognition, which would not benefit the ‘victim’.
PEMRA chairman was reinstated by court, but he had to proceed on leave in view of the situation created by the government for him. The account general was also reinstated by court. But the government has sent him on forced leave, saying the court had not stopped it from taking such a step.
The government is also determined to privatise dozens of state-owned enterprises at the earliest, regardless of the negative reaction coming from various opposition parties.
People’s problems are growing and various parties are preparing to launch a protest campaign. The situation is likely to start changing during the next few months.

Pakistan’s ex-leader Musharraf too sick for treason trial: Texas doctor - World News
Fakhar ur Rehman, Wajahat S Khan and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - A Texas doctor says Pakistan’s General Pervez Musharraf is suffering from an “alarming” heart condition, according to lawyers excusing the former military ruler’s latest no-show at a court to face treason charges.
The former dictator must be transferred to the United States for urgent treatment, according to a letter from cardiac specialist Arjumand Hashmi at the Paris Medical Center in Paris, Texas.

The findings on his cardiac [scan] are alarming," wrote Hashmi, who has been treating Musharraf since 2006.
The doctor’s letter was presented by Musharraf’s lawyer, Anwar Mansoor, to a Special Court that is considering treason charges against him. The ex-leader was summoned to appear last year but has failed to attend hearings four times, citing security or health concerns.

If he is eventually charged with “high treason” it would be a major setback for Pakistan’s powerful army. If convicted, he could be executed.
Musharraf was admitted to a military hospital two weeks ago. Hashmi’s letter states the diagnosis is based on “current reports” on Musharraf’s heart condition, but does not state when and where the tests were conducted.
“Based on the findings it is my professional opinion that he be transferred at the earliest to our medical facility for further diagnostic and therapeutic treatment,” said the letter, dated Jan. 9.
The letter “does not hold any evidential value,” according to prosecutors at the court. Pakistan-born Hashmi is also the mayor of Paris.

How dis ZAB came in this thread? better option would be Zia! You need to change constitution to try ZAB as traitor but all PMs would then be tried in it. ZAB today is most like personality in Pakistan check Imran Khan, Nawaz Sharif and other statements. Even people not liking PPP from all political parties are admirers of the great services of ZAB. Your hatred is confined to few Zia Shaheed Party members :)

Re: Musharraf’s treason trial

http://www.thenews.com.pk/Todays-News-13-27974-You-are-a-Lifafa-journalist-we-will-tackle-you

ISLAMABAD: Ahmed Raza Kasuri, the lawyer for former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf in the high treason case, on Thursday vented his anger on a journalist over a question after the hearing of the case in the special court.

After the hearing of the case, a journalist asked Ahmed Raza Kasuri why the ‘Commando General’ did not appear before the court and what was the position of his medical report, Kasuri became furious and said, “You are defaming Pakistan’s Commando General, you are being sold, you are a Lifafa journalist, you should be ashamed of such questions, you seem to be an Indian agent, it seems we will have to take the sold journalists to task.”

At that point, somebody asked Kasuri that he too got payment from his client for defending him in the treason case. Kasuri got more sentimental, saying, “You are the people who were paid and you are the people who take Lifafas.”

He added, “Shame on you. Shame on you.” At this, the media persons replied Kasuri in the same coin. He said the trial against Musharraf was politically motivated.“It is a cock and bull story. The trial has been initiated by Nawaz Sharif because of the 1999 incident. He is taking personal revenge against Musharraf,” Kasuri alleged.
