Re: Musharraf's resume
his biggest negative: lacking the cunning needed to operate in pakistani political environment. his mistake on the political front has came to haunt pak big time. he should have foreseen the turmoil that would be created this year by his opponents who wanted to create chaos to prevent smooth political transition. musharraf could have neutralised his opponents by calling early elections. any assembly that would have emerged would have easily voted for giving him second term which would have taken supreme court out of play. once he had the mandate for second term, he would have much more leeway to deal with jehadis and incompetent judges. instead musharraf dismissed cj without thinking of political consequences. mistake on political front has given discredited politicians another lease on life.
other mistakes: giving too much freedom to jehadi-sympathising, ratings hungry media which turned any political development to full blown crisis. urdu medium pak media was always opposed to pak's cooperation with americans and lacking any ethics, media peddled all sorts of lies to make musharraf look unpopular. musharraf should have been smart enough to realise that pak society was not ready for unfettered media and he should have only given out licenses to groups who would have agreed to back his policies.
one more negative about musharraf is that he has been too eager to cultivate relationship with western media which will never portray pak in a good light. musharraf should have told gora media to take a hike and this wpuld have endeared him to pakistanis.
in summary, pak would have been better off if musharraf had acted like a dictator instead of dictator-lite. pakistanis see tolerance as weakness and weakness gives license to people to commit chaos. msuharraf should have clamped down much earlier.
