Re: Musharraf's resume

his biggest negative: lacking the cunning needed to operate in pakistani political environment. his mistake on the political front has came to haunt pak big time. he should have foreseen the turmoil that would be created this year by his opponents who wanted to create chaos to prevent smooth political transition. musharraf could have neutralised his opponents by calling early elections. any assembly that would have emerged would have easily voted for giving him second term which would have taken supreme court out of play. once he had the mandate for second term, he would have much more leeway to deal with jehadis and incompetent judges. instead musharraf dismissed cj without thinking of political consequences. mistake on political front has given discredited politicians another lease on life.

other mistakes: giving too much freedom to jehadi-sympathising, ratings hungry media which turned any political development to full blown crisis. urdu medium pak media was always opposed to pak's cooperation with americans and lacking any ethics, media peddled all sorts of lies to make musharraf look unpopular. musharraf should have been smart enough to realise that pak society was not ready for unfettered media and he should have only given out licenses to groups who would have agreed to back his policies.

one more negative about musharraf is that he has been too eager to cultivate relationship with western media which will never portray pak in a good light. musharraf should have told gora media to take a hike and this wpuld have endeared him to pakistanis.

in summary, pak would have been better off if musharraf had acted like a dictator instead of dictator-lite. pakistanis see tolerance as weakness and weakness gives license to people to commit chaos. msuharraf should have clamped down much earlier.

Re: Musharraf's resume

pros
-played usa like a fiddle, something no other pakistani ruler can claim

cons
-should have gotten the 2002 constitutional amendments approved by a public referendum, something that would have put bb/ns out of business
-rather than ban media, he ought to have unleashed them on ns/bb to his advantage

Re: Musharraf's resume

the biggest positive for me is that he did away separate electorate for minorities. bb claims to be a secular leader and yet she had no problems in making minorities live under a system akin to aparthied. musharraf otoh ignored mullah cheekh pukkar and made sure minorities voted with muslims.

Re: Musharraf's resume

the biggest negative for me is NRO, i could care less about ifti.
but the biggest blunder was surrounding himself with morons. he should have picked better ppl, he had the power to force PML-Q to field better candidates or atleat not have complete louts like wasi be a minister.

he brought shaukat in, he could have brought other such ppl in as well. and he did not, and to me that is the biggest disappointment.

Re: Musharraf's resume

Plus:

Economy (esp boom in banking, telecom sectors)
Media (though it was slashed in later part of his regime)
Promotion of PhDs

Minus:
Let Nawaz Sharif go in 1st place
Let Nawaz Sharif go 2nd time
Dysfunctional NAB
Negotiate with BB for power
NRO
Kicked Judiciary around twice (2002, 2007)
Kicking constiution around
Delayed operation of Lal Masjid and using it to cover case against himself
Delayed operation of Swat
Issuing stupid statements like women are willing to be raped for asylum into other/western countries
Silence on May 12 massacre

Re: Musharraf's resume

He could've used the people who are NOW part of care-taker cabinet as advisor or of some other important function.

Re: Musharraf's resume

true, i blame him for not cleaning the leadership just liek I blame politicval parties for not cleaning their leadership ranks...not right in either situation.

Re: Musharraf's resume

pros

- should have been more lenient against the oppersition from the begining,

And let’s conclude who is the best.

Positive:

  • Saved Pakistan after years of mismanagement by previous governments.
  • Gave Pakistan Unprecedented Economic Growth; Free Media; and Free Judiciary.

Negatives:

  • Did not impose Emergency earlier. *]Did not act like a Dictataor.

Re: Musharraf's resume

Negatives.

  1. Going for elections to early in 2002. Should have waited at least a few more years.
  2. Related to above, he should not have let NAB deviate from it's across the board accountablity, in the rush to elections.
  3. NRO.
  4. Too much media freedom, too fast - should have been done in stages.

Re: Musharraf's resume

Pluses:

Got rid of NA and BB at the start of his term
Bought in Shaukat Aziz who turned the economy around

Negatives

  1. Deal with corrupt people like the Chaudharies
  2. The most important thing for him is kursi not Pakistan
  3. To save his kursi did deal with BB
  4. Again did deal with NS to save his kursi
  5. Got himself elected by a rubber stamp parliament with 95% of the votes cast
  6. Used terrorist to further strengthen his hold on power
  7. Used Lal Masjid terrorist to counter CJ
  8. Kept quite about the May massacare, no investigation.
  9. Made shameful statements that women get raped to get visas to foreign countries.
  10. Kidnapped and held people in indefinite custody.
  11. Destroyed the judiciary in order to strengthen his hold on the power.
  12. While Swat and FATA burned he was busy gagging lawyers, journalists and anyone who spoke against him.
  13. Totally demoralised the army
  14. For the first time in the history of Pakistan the army was being despised by the people and this was due to Mush's behaviour. 15 Portrayed himself more important than Pakistan as anyone saying anything against him was charged with sedition.
  15. Destroyed free media.
  16. Imposed emergency to save his rule.
  17. Dealt brutally with people who opposed his emergency.
