Musharraf to get more U.S. support.

Bad news for BB and Nawaz.

Quote: “I don’t think that President Musharraf has reached the end of his line,” said Ronald E. Neumann, who until a month ago was American ambassador in Kabul and is now on a mission to Central Asian states to explain the situation and strategy in Afghanistan. “He seems to be a leader who is capable of many good things, which is why we have given him a great deal of support, and plan to give more support,” he told journalists in a briefing in Islamabad.

The US has been almost totally silent during the last 2 plus months on the events in Pakistan.

Re: Musharraf to get more U.S. support.

*US lawmakers want Musharraf to keep polls pledge *

WASHINGTON: Key US lawmakers have asked President George W. Bush's administration to ensure that embattled Pakistani military ruler Pervez Musharraf does not renege on a pledge to hold elections this year.

In a letter the lawmakers asked Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to publicly call for an immediate end to ongoing violence in Pakistan and urge Musharraf's administration to hold "free and fair" polls by end 2007.

The message was sent as the State Department cautioned Islamabad Tuesday against using a newly introduced law to curb press freedom in the wake of Musharraf's suspension of Pakistan's top judge, which was heavily criticized in the media.

"It would appear that underlying these protests is a widespread impression that President Musharraf may not live up to his promise to hold free and fair presidential and parliamentary elections this year," the US lawmakers said.

They consisted of the Democratic chairmen of the US Senate and House foreign affairs panels, Joseph Biden and Tom Lantos, respectively, as well as ranking Republican member of the House panel, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

*"It is our impression that many Pakistani citizens view the president's campaign against the nation's chief justice as an attempt to cow the judicial system into sanctioning electoral rigging and extra-constitutional delay of a return to a fully civilian government," they said.' *

Noting that the driving force behind the protests were civil society groups, they said "a flawed election would marginalize moderate parties and voices, empowering extremist groups to exert far greater influence over Pakistani society."

Lantos, Biden and Ros-Lehtinen said US and Pakistan interests were both served by "a speedy restoration of full democracy to Pakistan, and by an end to state-sponsored intimidation of Pakistani citizens protesting government actions in a legal and peaceful manner."

They urged Rice "to make a public appeal to this end, and to raise these matters forcefully in your interactions with Pakistani government officials."

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack could not immediately confirm whether Rice had replied the letter.

"I'll see if she's actually written a response or we have written a response on her behalf," he told reporters. But McCormack cautioned Pakistan against using the media decree signed by Musharraf on Monday to curb press freedom.

Under the decree, the Pakistan electronic media regulator can now seal the premises or confiscate the equipment of television and radio channels, and suspend the licenses of offenders.

"The Pakistani government is going to need to come to terms with new freedoms that are emerging in Pakistani society, concerning freedom of expression and the media as well," McCormack said.

"We absolutely support the growth of responsible media in Pakistan and how if this decree is used to actually shut down media, that is something we are going to watch very closely," he said.
