Musharraf has moderate chance of becoming MNA - thenews.com.pk
PESHAWAR: Acceptance of nomination papers of former dictator Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf from the lone National Assembly constituency of Chitral gave him a moderate chance to be elected as MNA.
He has the prospects to win election on NA-32 because people in Chitral feel indebted to him for resuming and completing the construction of the long-demanded Lowari tunnel. According to residents, people in Chitral support him in the May 11 elections to pay gratitude to him.
Chitral is probably the only district where Pervez Musharrafâs All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) has fielded candidates on all seats-NA-32, PK-89 and PK-90. âWe are 100 percent sure that Pervez Musharraf will win,â said Ghulam Muhammad, a former MPA who is contesting election from PK-90 on APML ticket. He claimed no candidate could withstand Musharraf in election as he enjoyed immense popular support. Ghulam Muhammad said his seat was also âconfirmed.â âWe will stage a clean-sweep in Chitral by wining all the seats,â he added.
Gul Hamaad Farooqi, a journalist in Chitral, said Musharrafâs supporters took out a procession and distributed sweets to celebrate the acceptance of his nomination papers. âPeople were ecstatic which shows he enjoys great support,â he said.
Heavy snowfall on Lowari Top would make Chitral a landlocked district in winters, rendering people stranded either in Chitral or in the rest of the country. In attempts to cross the snow-clad mountain by trekking it, avalanches have buried thousands of Chitralis. Though the tunnel is yet to be given the final touches and formally opened, Chitralis have been using it for the last five years.
âMusharraf constructed Lowari Tunnel for us, which connected Chitralis to the rest of the country. We donât have to travel through Afghanistan now. We can shift our patients to hospitals in other cities easily,â Ghulam Muhammad said, adding peopleâs major problem that remained unsolved for decades was solved.
Some residents said Musharraf would be their choice in the coming election. âWe are indebted to him for constructing Lowari Tunnel and we will vote for him irrespective of party affiliations,â said Bashir Ahmad, president of the district cricket association.
Another reason for support of the APML in Chitral is Shahzada Mohiuddin, member of the royal family who was MNA in the last tenure of the assembly. He has his own vote bank in Chitral that would go in favour of Musharraf. His son, Khalid Pervez, is contesting election on PK-89 on APML ticket.
Musharrafâs prospects to win election have also worried all other parties that have united to oust him at the stage of scrutiny, but were disappointed unexpectedly. His papers were rejected in other areas that also raised a question as to how his papers were accepted in Chitral. Aminur Rahman, a prominent lawyer of the Peshawar High Court, said other parties could appeal against his nomination papersâ acceptance under sub-section 5 of the section 14 of the Peopleâs Representation Act 1973.
