Musharraf Further Isolated - Army Replaces Mushy Loyalists

The little tin pot tyrant is being pushed further into a corner.

Pakistan’s army chief has carried out his first reshuffle of major military posts, replacing some commanders who had been promoted by President Pervez Musharraf.
The military reshuffle is the first since President Musharraf stepped down as army chief and appointed General Ashfaq Kayani to replace him last November.
Pakistan’s military said Monday General Kayani has transferred two army corps commanders promoted under Mr. Musharraf to other posts.
The corps commander in the city of Lahore, Lieutenant-General Shafaat Ullah Shah, has been reassigned to the post of logistics chief at army headquarters. Shah had served as a military secretary to Mr. Musharraf.
Another corps commander in the city of Mangla, Lieutenant-General Sajjad Akram, has been transferred to a government agency responsible for earthquake reconstruction.
General Kayani said this month that Pakistan’s military will stay out of politics as Mr. Musharraf begins to work with a democratically-elected government.
Another key appointment made by General Kayani Monday is the naming of Major-General Muhammad Rehan Burney as the army’s surgeon-general. The position had been vacant since the assassination of Lieutenant General Mushtaq Baig in a suicide attack in the city of Rawalpindi last month.
The military has ruled Pakistan for more than half of the country’s 60 years of independence.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan’s army chief has made changes to important posts in the military as a new civilian government made up of opponents of former army chief President Pervez Musharraf prepares to take power.
The changes by army chief General Ashfaq Kayani, announced late on Monday, were the first major reshuffle in the army’s top ranks since Musharraf stepped down as army chief in November.
The military has ruled more than half of Pakistan’s 60 years of independence and changes in the army’s leadership have always been closely watched.
Security analysts said the changes were routine but with some of the commanders Musharraf promoted being replaced, they reflected the increasingly isolated president’s waning influence in the powerful military.
The most important changes involved commanders of two of the army’s nine corps.
Lieutenant-General Shafaat Ullah Shah, a close confidante of Musharraf, was replaced as commander of a Lahore-based corps.
Shah was appointed chief of logistics staff at army headquarters and was replaced by Lieutenant General Ijaz Ahmed Bakhshi, the military said in a statement.
Lieutenant-General Sajjad Akram, the commander of another corps based in the city of Mangla, was appointed deputy head of a government agency set up to oversee rehabilitation in areas devastated by an October 2005 earthquake
The former deputy of the earthquake rehabilitation agency, Lieutenant General Nadeem Ahmed, was made commander of the Mangla-based corps.
NEW CHIEF “ESTABLISHING WRIT”
Musharraf’s political allies suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the opposition in a February 18 general election.
The party of assassinated former prime minister Benazir Bhutto won the most seats and is forming a coalition government with the party of another former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, which came second.
Sharif, the prime minister then army chief Musharraf ousted in 1999, has called for Musharraf to resign and there is speculation the new government could try to force the president from office, which might trigger instability.
Army chief Kayani said this month the military would stay out of politics, increasing doubts whether the army, for years Musharraf’s main source of power, would go out on a limb to back him in the event of confrontation with the elected government.
“With the reshuffle of Musharraf’s loyal corps commanders Kayani is establishing his writ over the army without appearing precipitate,” said one security analyst who declined to be identified.
The News newspaper said the new appointments showed “the sands of power were shifting from those till now running the show for almost a decade”.
“The changes in the army command will hopefully enable the new army chief to fully support the new political system and play the role of neutral member of the power troika which President Pervez Musharraf has envisaged some months ago,” it said
Musharraf sees the country being run by the prime minister with the help of the president and army chief.
Pakistan’s Western allies are worried about more instability in the nuclear-armed country, an important U.S. security ally that is already under attack from within by militants inspired by al Qaeda.

Re: Musharraf Further Isolated - Army Replaces Mushy Loyalists

What did Kiyani gain by replacing those commanders who were promoted by Musharraf and why does he want to isolate him?

Re: Musharraf Further Isolated - Army Replaces Mushy Loyalists

my guess...
Mushy will challenge the restoration of the judges in court. The Mushy endorsed SC will vote down the restoration. The new govt. will forcibly try installing the judges since the now control the police and associate institutions. The SC will call to the army to help
]At this stage Kiyani will be under pressure to either back Mushy or the new govt
He will need his own men or he'll be in trouble should be make a decision against Mushy

Re: Musharraf Further Isolated - Army Replaces Mushy Loyalists

so musharraf gets further isolated, forced to leave, booted out whatever. The question that remains is all the issues that ppl have been noting for years here about Army involvement in pak politics, ISI lack of accountability etc, does that get corrected?

Just isolating and removing a person is not going to do jack, otherwise we would not have had a Zia, or a Musharraf to begn with.

Actually, what is more likely is that Military in order to maintan its grip does damage control, some faces change...but the real power still gets retained by military.

if we look beyond personalities, do we see a real change?

Re: Musharraf Further Isolated - Army Replaces Mushy Loyalists

Excellent question. I guess with due time maybe, but for that we have to strengthen the system.

Re: Musharraf Further Isolated - Army Replaces Mushy Loyalists

I see a de evolution. A morph back into our queerer, more corrupt selves. I see a retarding or dumbing down of our attitudes. Mere simpletons this nation has become. This god dammed cocoon man, that we sort of managed to get out of 8 years ago..we are right back in.

Re: Musharraf Further Isolated - Army Replaces Mushy Loyalists

What a funny title of the news :)

Pakistan's army chief has carried out his first reshuffle of major military posts,** replacing some commanders who had been promoted by President Pervez Musharraf.**
Well, who in any crucial post is not promoted by President Musharraf in Pakistan army? 'Some' does not come into equation, as 'all' commanders who would command Pakistan army for next 10 years are promoted by President Musharraf and are loyal to President ... and most likely any further promotion would come to those who would be loyal to President, and that includes anyone even if the person get promoted to Brigadier.

Even Gen Kiyani got promoted by Musharraf from rank of Col to Brigadier to Major General to Lt General and today to Army Chief.

When in 1999, army officers who were already generals when Musharraf became army chief revolted against their newly appointed Army Chief Ziauddin and their corrupt Prime Minister Nawaz (who had 2/3 majority in parliament), than only cuckoo mind would think that present army would let crooks in parliament do anything illegally or would side with corrupt politician against Presidency or would even keep quite if anything happen to President (whatever Army says for public consumption).
The corps commander in the city of Lahore, Lieutenant-General Shafaat Ullah Shah, has been reassigned to the post of logistics chief at army headquarters. Shah had served as a military secretary to Mr. Musharraf.
Now, is corps commander of Lahore a more crucial post or the logistics chief? I think that logistic chief is much more crucial post (even though the person may not command any corps). But does it matter when next corps commander of Lahore, Lt Gen Ijaz Ahmed Bakhshi is promoted to the rank of Lt Gen by President Musharraf too?
Another corps commander in the city of Mangla, Lieutenant-General Sajjad Akram, has been transferred to a government agency responsible for earthquake reconstruction.
Big deal? :)

Well, new corps commander of Mangla (one of most crucial corps commander) is the former deputy of the earthquake rehabilitation agency, Lieutenant General Nadeem Ahmed. Well, Lt Gen Nadeem was not only promoted by President Musharraf, but was given a very important job of earthquake rehabilitation and it shows that President trusted his capability a lot. *.

As for some thinking that war on terror is what President used to stay in power are mistaken again, because actually 'war on terror' was something that made President unpopular amongst a section of Pakistanis and weaken his rule, that President as well as army knows, but they also knew that it was necessary for Pakistan for the good of Pakistan. President went against Taliban and joined in 'war on terror' knowing that it would not give his rule strength but it would weaken the rule, would make him unpopular amongst a section of society. President and Army also knew that 'so-called religious party politicians' and other 'crook and selfish politicians' would use this 'war on terror' for their propaganda to fool uneducated and gullible masses.*

Re: Musharraf Further Isolated - Army Replaces Mushy Loyalists

Saleem.
Two things
For these moves being pro or anti Musharraf, go check the Pak Army message boards where it is being said the replaced commanders are Musharrafs cousins.
Second, when exactly is PML-Q going to sweep the election?*

Re: Musharraf Further Isolated - Army Replaces Mushy Loyalists

I do not know if those two corps commanders are Musharraf cousins are not, but since when people in army only trust those who are cousins? What I know, people in army trust others more than people in politics full of lotas and people in other departments. Anyhow:

The army reshuffle that happened is: Two corps commander moved to other posts. Can you answer these 4 questions with reasons?

Corps commander Lahore Lt Gen Shafaat Ullah Shah made chief of logistics at GHQ. Is it bad? Is being chief of logistics at GHQ not more responsible post than just being corps commander?

Corps commander Mangla Lt Gen Sajjad Akram moved to become deputy head to oversee earthquake rehabilitation. Is that bad move? Is being deputy head to oversee earthquake rehabilitation not more responsible post than just being corps commander?

Lt Gen Ijaz Ahmed Bakhshi made corps commander of Lahore. How can anyone say that Lt Gen Ijaz who was promoted all the way from Lt col – Col – Brigadier – major Gen to Lt Gen by President Musharraf, would not be against President?

Former deputy of Earthquake rehabilitation, Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed made corps commander of Mangla. How can anyone say that Lt Gen Nadeem who was promoted all the way from Lt col – Col – Brigadier – major Gen to Lt Gen by President Musharraf and was trusted with responsibility of overseeing earthquake rehabilitation, would not be against President?

Well, in Pakistan when a party sweeps the election, it is always bad news and there is no reason to believe that it would not be bad news in future too. It had happened 3 times and one can see the results:

1971 election: Mujeeb won simple majority (not sweep, still it was not hung parliament): Result … Pakistan broke up.

1977: Bhutto rigged the election to get 2/3 majority. Result was that Zia sacked Bhutto and hanged him.

1997: Nawaz won the election with sweeping victory. Result, Nawaz was kicked out of office and was suppose to get hanged, but Musharraf felt pity on him and gave him pardon.

Now you want another sweeping victory?

In present election, no party got even 1/3 or 91 of the contested seats (272). As for PML(Q), let wait for next election, that may not be too far in time :)

Re: Musharraf Further Isolated - Army Replaces Mushy Loyalists

A quick question to you all…who were the people who implemented the coup in 1999? hmmm…that would be the Corp Commander’s right? So if a Musharraf loyalist is no longer Corp Commander, that means he has actually command control over the troops based in and around Lahore. Yeah that in no way is a major change.

Re: Musharraf Further Isolated - Army Replaces Mushy Loyalists

Salim. Explain this.
Musharrafs wife relative Ijaz Shah and his own nephew Nadeem Taj have been sacked from their positions as head of MI and ISI since Kiyani took over. Any explanations?

Re: Musharraf Further Isolated - Army Replaces Mushy Loyalists

Yaar … why you bring news from liar’s den of Nawaz Ganja full of mega liars using media as well as their misguided chelay chamchay to spread lies? Please read my post of truth and all will get clear

In your last post you made a very crucial army position, second most important post in Army, through whom Army Chief commands and checks the positions of all corps commanders, that is post of ‘Chief of logistics Staff’ as demotion when Corps commander Lahore ‘Lt Gen Shafaat Ullah Shah’ was made chief of logistics at GHQ, just because paper considered that Lt Gen Shafaat Ullah Shah is President’s man (though in reality, all in Pakistan army are same, and are loyal to each other and President).

Now, sorry to say, but you are spreading lies again. Just imagine, you have introduced Ijaz Shah as relative of Musharraf’s wife and Nadeem Taj as nephew of Musharraf, then gave news full of lies that they were both sacked. Fact kiya aap ko atna bura lagtaa hay? What you get from spreading disinformation and lies?

What is fact?

Brigadier (r) Ijaz Shah, who was chief of IB, is not relative of Musharraf, neither Lt Gen Nadeem Taj (current DG ISI) is nephew of Musharraf, as u mentioned. Though, you are right that Director General MI is relative of President Musharraf. He is Maj Gen Mian Nadeem Ijaz Ahmed — DG MI.

Mother of Mian Nadeem Ijaz Ahmed is elder sister of Sehba Musharraf (hence he is her nephew).

[You want reference? Here it is:

It also tells that Ijaz Shah who you are making Musharraf relative is just an old friend. It also tells that DG ISI was present when Iftikhar was taken to task. Only thing is that his affidavits was omitted, but why is speculation. Most likely, affidavits was omitted under the order of President, as DG ISI, Kiyani must have got information regarding Ifitkhar to President too, but President had something for him in mind, and thus kept him out of any controversy if anything goes wrong. We should remember that if 3 were close to Musharrf then 4th (Kiyani) must be as close. Obviously President Musharraf would not have made DG ISI someone whom Musharraf did not trusted as much as others close to him.

Lakin, thug Ganjay kee ‘team of liars’ khush fahmi may rahna pasand kartee hay aur apnay paid media kay zaryia propaganda spread kartee hay :). If you get any news coming from Ganja Shareef and his ‘team of liars’ or ‘paid media of Pakistan’, be careful, as they would always lie and their news would be propaganda full of lies as they are habitual liars.

In section: A long standing rule finally broken

‘Major General Mian Nadeem Ijaz Ahmad son of Late Mian Ijaz Ahmad’, also happens to be Mrs Sehba Musharraf’s nephew; his mother being Mrs Musharraf’s elder sister. ]

What I know, he is still DG MI. Best part is that, yesterday (Sat 29th March 2008) COAS Gen Kiyani gave awards to selected few from the army. **Amongst awards, the biggest awards that was given was Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Civil) given to one officer. **Further, there were 101 Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Military), 3 tamgha-e-Imtiaz (civil) and 8 UN Medals (to those who got shaheed).

Now you should know who got Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Civil) … Here is list:

Are there corps commander who are “just being corps commander”? I mean are you saying they don’t have any responsibilities?
