Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

Mushy is guilty of lot of things, but this is not one of them.

Pakistan ex-head Musharraf charged in Bhutto death

An anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, has indicted former president and army chief Pervez Musharraf and six others in the 2007 death of Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, according to the country’s government-run radio station, Radio Pakistan.

No one could be reached at the Pakistani embassy in Washington.

Musharraf denied the charges after they were read to him, according to the government station.

A hearing will take place in the case on Aug. 27.

Musharraf has asked not to have to appear in person before the court and a judge has reserved judgment on the request, according to the radio organization.

Also indicted were former Deputy Inspector General Saud Aziz‚ Superintendent of Police Khurram Aijaz‚ Rafaqat Hussain‚ Hussnain Gul‚ Sher Zaman and Abdul Rashid, Radio Pakistan says.

Photos of Benazir Bhutto began emerging early Tuesday morning on a Facebook page created in support of her. Followers posted supportive comments such as “great leader.”

The court’s decision marks the first time that any army chief in Pakistan has been charged with a crime.

Musharraf took power in a 1999 coup and stepped down nearly a decade later.

Prosecutor Chaudry Muhammed Azher says Musharraf has been charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder and facilitation for murder, according to the Associated Press.

Bhutto died in 2007 during a gun and bomb attack at a rally in Rawalpindi. Prosecutors have said Musharraf, who was president at the time, failed to adequately protect her.

Musharraf returned to Pakistan in March after nearly four years outside the country, according to the Associated press. He vowed he would take part in the country’s May elections, but he has little popular support and has faced a litany of legal problems related to his rule.

He has been confined to his house on the outskirts Islamabad as part of his legal problems, and was brought to court Tuesday amid tight security, the Associated Press reported.

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

how do you know??

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

^^^ Did he shoot her? No. She was killed by terrorists.

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

Apparently, he is not charged for shooting her. The accusation is of conspiring and supporting the plans to execute her.

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

To prove conspiracy they must show that he directly or indirectly supported terrorists in assassination of BB. If so, where is the evidence? This is a political witch-hunt & it will backfire.

Otherwise, he can at best be charged with criminal negligence & that, too, is very hard to prove. The head of state is not directly responsible for security of every individual in the country. Thats a police's job.

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

A pretty silly indictment. If that is the case, then all rulers should be indicted for the murder of any innocent civilian.....after all, a ruler is the overall incharge of law enforcement across the country.

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

brilliant, just brilliant! keep involving nation in meaningless indictments and issues.

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

But then who gives a rat's behind to ordinary citizen's killings :(

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

a political vendetta or witch-hunt aptly describes this indictment by the selected judiciary

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

one of the leading 'tajziya kaar' on nawa-e-waqt show with Amir Abbas suggested that Musharraf will be allowed to leave the country well before any verdict could be reached.

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

If he had done that, he would have never come back to Pakistan.

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

Baseless accusations. Mr. Baldie is just trying to get revenge for the fact that Musharraf foiled his plans for killing him. If anything why isn't Nawaz being charged for murder? There is solid evidence he was going to blow up Musharraf on a plane. :-/

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

What are you smoking bibi??

He wasn't try to blow him up......he only stopped from landing.

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

As butt saab mentioned, it was just his plane being diverted but apparently, the black boxes went "missing" leading to CTBT's acquittal back when he came come for good from saudia.

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

lol in the other thread you said sikander was also shot dead... just curious, where exactly do you get ur news from?

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto’s death

Mush is fkd! He should not have come to Pakistan particularly in this ganga rule. I don’t know what he was thinking when he was coming back to Pakistan. Perhaps he thought ‘sub se pehlay Pakistan’ would save him. Even he is allowed to run out side of Pakistan, any court decision proving him to be involving him of BB’s murder, will haunt him till he is alive anywhere in the world.

Kayani doubted Taliban killed Benazir, recounts UN investigator - DAWN.COM

KARACHI: A United Nations (UN) investigator has recounted that Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani had doubts about Pakistani Taliban’s involvement in the murder of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

Kayani suspected whether the slain chief of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Baitullah Mehsud had organised the assassination, as was claimed by an interior ministry spokesman at a news conference a day after Bhutto’s death on December 27, 2007.
Former President General (retd) Pervez Musharraf’s government based its claim on Mehsud’s telephonic conversation intercepted by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
Kayani had called the press conference “premature” and that “It should not have been done,” Heraldo Munoz wrote in his book titled “Getting Away With Murder” – excerpts from which were released on Monday on foreignaffairs.com.
Timings of the release are significant given that Musharraf has been indicted by an Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) in the case on Tuesday.
“One cannot conclude culpability solely on a phone intercept,” the army chief was quoted as saying by Chilean diplomat Munoz, who headed a UN panel that investigated Benazir Bhutto’s assassination.
Referring to hosing down of the crime scene within 24 hours, General Kayani also criticised local policemen in Rawalpindi, calling them “amateur”.
“If in 24 hours you don’t completely secure the scene, then you lose the threads to solve a case,” he said.
Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a gun-and-bomb attack outside Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh on December 27, 2007 while Musharraf was president. She was killed after addressing an election campaign rally in the city.
Munoz held the meeting with Gen Kayani in Rawalpindi on February 25, 2010.
“In Bhutto’s case, it would seem that the village assassinated her: al Qaeda gave the order; the Pakistani Taliban executed the attack, possibly backed or at least encouraged by elements of the establishment; the Musharraf government facilitated the crime through its negligence; local senior policemen attempted a cover-up; Bhutto’s lead security team failed to properly safeguard her; and most Pakistani political actors would rather turn the page than continue investigating who was behind her assassination,” he wrote.
“Probably no government or court of law will be able or willing to fully disentangle the whole truth from that web. It may well be that Bhutto’s assassination will be another unsolved case in the long history of impunity in Pakistan, and that the controversy surrounding her assassination will endure as much as her memory,” wrote the UN investigator.

Re: Musharraf charged in Bhutto's death

OK if Musharraf can be accused of Crime of Negligence then President Zardari can also be accused of Negligence in not protecting all the innocent victims of Drone Attacks!
