WASHINGTON: Anne Woods Patterson, the US ambassador-designate to Pakistan, has praised President Gen Pervez Musharraf as a “remarkable reformer” and “our friend”, but said Washington was pushing for a civilian elected government in Pakistan.
“President Musharraf has been our friend … He has been a moderniser in Pakistan, certainly on issues of the economy and on issues like women’s rights. Actually, a rather remarkable moderniser,” Ms Patterson told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday.
However, she added: “I would not say we have unwavering support for Musharraf. I think we have pushed for elections, we’ve pushed for institutional development in Pakistan, and it’s up to the electorate to decide the next steps. And that’s our policy, and that’s the policy that I will pursue if I’m confirmed.”
Asked about Gen Musharraf giving up his army post, Patterson answered, “That’s up to the people of Pakistan. And if the elections are free and fair and transparent, they will have several opportunities to address this.” She added: “Our policy is to push for a civilian elected government in Pakistan.”
Asked if Pakistan is “on the verge of a state of emergency,” Patterson replied, “I would be fairly confident to predict that no state of emergency is going to be imposed. Our policy is to push for free and fair and transparent elections before February of 2008.”
