Re: Muscat
I have been to Muscat three times. The city itself is located on hills at seaside. These are not green hills but kind of mud colored (dry) hills......very clean city...very disciplined and beautifully lit up at night. I like Muscat over other Middle East cities because it is quiet, peaceful and very different. Omani wardrobe and culture have a separate identity...
You can see good shopping centers all around Muscat.....go to CCC Center, Sultan Center, Al-Harthi Complex, LuLu Center, Sabco, Araimi Complex and plenty of others. All Western chains are there....good food too.....Beaches are very nice....we used to go to Yeti beach (1.5 hours from Muscat) and Qantab beach (30 minutes). Qantab beach has big boulders in sea which look like gold bars laying on sea bed in sun light while u ride the boat.... Also visit Qurum beach.... near Muscat's exclusive residential area.
You must visit Old Muscat which ls a walled city and now preserved by Govt. Go to Sultan Qaboos Palace.
In Muscat all buildings have two colors (off white and light brown)......Sultan does not allow colorful buildings and houses....even color needs approval of buildings department. Really neat....very strict govt...
My sister still lives there with family....
Re: Muscat
wow, you've explained it so well, muscat sounds like a wonderful place...
Re: Muscat
Muscat is a wonderful place, much less commercialised like Dubai and all. Mustana has elaborated very well, but i wouldnt pass on a visit if you have a chance to go. The beaches are nice, malls are awesome and the food is just great. For a more traditional bazar outlook, dont forget to visit Mutrah souq.
Re: Muscat
I am living in Muscat for last 5 years. Yeti beach is now 1/2 hour away from ruwi instead of 1 1/2 hour away.
I am in off roading and some other things to do are;
Diving center at qantab beach.
Jabal shams waterfalls. 3 hours from mct.
Rustaq springs. 2 1/2 hours from mct.
Quriyat wadis. 2 1/2 hours from mct.
Masirah Island. 10 hours from mct.
Ras al had (turtle's beach). 5 hours from mct.
Salalah during monsoon. 12 hours from mct.
Wahiba sands. 4 hours from mct.
If somebody is interested in classical music they should check the schedule for royal oman symphony.
For food my picks are;
Italian. O sole mio in shatti qurum. Beala in mct city center. santino at ccc area and mct city center.
South american. Barr al jissah hotels and resorts. Nandos in ccc center area. Pavo real in madina qaboos.
Indian. Mumtaz mahal in sarooj. Copper kettle in ruwi.
Chinese. noodle house in mct city center. and there is a small place owned by mr. chung at the back of intercontinental hotel in qurum. magic wok at mct city center.
Pakistani. Omar khyam in al khuwair. Haikal in ruwi looks dirty but food is excellent men only or take away recommended. Faisalabadi at Ghala looks dirty but good food men only or take away recommended.
Arabic. Al maida in Al hail south area.
Snacks. Bollywood chaat at ccc area. punjab sweets in ruwi area. crepe cafe at mct city center.
Sea food. Trader vik's at intercontinental hotel. Fish house at markaz al bahja.
Bars with good english live bands. Trader vik's and al ghazaal at intercontinental. Pavo real in madina qaboos. Cellar at radisson sas.
Re: Muscat
I have moved from Muscat since 2000 but there used to be this one place in CBD area for shawarmas, we always went there. And also there was a Omar Khayam rest in Ruwi, theyhad the best chicken corn soup ever. And abbu used to take us to this not so uppity Paki rest in Ruwi, where we used to go upstairs for the family area. They had awesome tikkas.
I know, i know, all i worry about is food these days ![]()
Re: Muscat
my in laws lived there , my MIL (and husband when he visited) tell me it was a vry nice place....
Never been to omar khyam in ruwi., I have always been to Al khwair. Yeah that upstairs place I have been there but cannot remember the name, it was right on that ruwi round about.
Best thing about Oman is you can visit lush green Musandum region, enjoy water falls, visit many Islands, watch dolphins, do snorkeling, see desert, visit green region of Salalah. Visit Nakhal few hours drive from Muscat. The area with rich plantation of dates...
Plenty of religious sites.....tombs of Sahaba Karam are also in Oman....
Samri Jadoogar's qabar is also in Oman.
Land of Sheba is also in present day Oman (Queen Saba, Hazrat Suleiman's wife). Hazart Suleiman had control over all living creatures including Jinnat......
My sister is in Pakistan right now to get her son admitted in college. She tells me there were many cases when visitors who made movies of Samri's qabar when went home saw the tapes either misplaced (vanished) or turned blank.
I sometimes feel Oman as a mysterious place...

naz08, there is no place in Muscat where you can't go with family. It is the opposite of Dubai which heavily relies on nightlife... there are some hotels having clubs but it is not open like Dubai...

Grand Hayat is good hotel, excellent service and restuarants a nice nightclub called safari.
The better option is to go to barr al jissah.
