**Andy Murray believes he is ready to end his wait for a first Grand Slam title after beating Rafael Nadal to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open.**Murray played superbly as an epic match ended prematurely when Nadal retired with a knee injury in the third set.

“I think I’m ready to win a Grand Slam, definitely, and I’ve a good chance of doing it here,” said the 22-year-old.

Nadal also backed Murray’s hopes of becoming Britain’s first male Grand Slam winner since Fred Perry in 1936.

“He has a big chance,” said the world number two.

"I think this is a very good chance for him. For starters, he’s playing really well. And second thing, he’s already in semi-finals. So he is only two matches away.

“Every Grand Slam is special and every Grand Slam is important to win. For Andy, I think he deserves to win his first Grand Slam, and he is going to do it.”

In the other half of the draw, world number one Roger Federer will face Nikolay Davydenko in the next quarter-final before a repeat of the 2008 final sees third seed Novak Djokovic take on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for a place in the last four.

Nadal, champion in Melbourne last year, had his hands full trying to deal with Murray’s skill and aggressive intent, and was in trouble at two sets down even before injuring his knee at the end of the second set.

It was a slightly sour end to a titanic tussle, but means Murray has reached the last four in great shape, having not been taken past three sets in any of his matches in the lead up to the semi-finals.

Murray faces Marin Cilic for a place in the final, and revenge will be on his mind with the Croatian beating him in straight sets at the 2009 US Open.

This is already the furthest Murray has got at the Australian Open, beating his previous best of a round-four finish.

But after reaching the US Open final in 2008 and the semi-finals of Wimbledon last year, the Scot believes this could be his breakthrough tournament.

“I’ll try to play against Cilic like I did tonight, and if I do that then I’ve got a good chance of winning the semi,” he said.

"Even last year in the Slams, it took some pretty good performances to win against me.

"I’ll try to keep playing like I have been and if I do, I’m going to give myself opportunities to win Grand Slams. That’s what I want to do.

“That’s why I work hard and why I play tennis: to try to win these tournaments.”
