Murali now the highest wicket taker

he is on 519..somehow I am not happy…totally undeserving…
If anybody who deserves to get there…( and he will get there I am sure) it is Shane Warne.

welldone murali’for equalling the gr8 courtney walsh’s world record of 519 victims in tests!!! murali’ only took 89 tests to attain the feat, whilst his counterpart warne on 517 victim’s @ the mo’ has taken 110 tests to reach his currrent figures and it took walsh 132 tests to set the mark.

hopefully by the time murali’ is finised @ test level he will take 650+ wickets he can do it. shabash :k:

those are awesome stats and he deserves all the praise but the fact he got so many wickets in fewer tests is because of one plain reason. He is the ONLY wicket taker and there is no competition for five wicket hauls in Sri lankan team. Vaas shines rarely and thus murali on 519. Compare that with Walsh who had to share wickets with likes of Marshall and Ambrose and Warne who had Mcgrath, Gillespie and other bowlers to share wickets with. Now those two are awesome.

Awesome acheivement. He will probably end up around 600. :k:

amazing achievement especially since Murali is a spinner.

back in the days of WI fast bowlers and through the 90s who would've thought that two spinners would compete to become the highest test wicket-takers.

Lets see who will be the first one to mention the ‘C’ word :hehe:

Murali is an amazing bowler. A lot of mental toughness, and kinda like a one-man-army.

This man’s on the fast track to cricketing immortality :k:

ME…
So Jeveling Thrower equalled the world record. But for me Shane Warne is still the best Spinner world has ever seen followed by Chandra, Qadir & Gibbs.

I agree. Regardless of the wickets Murali's taken, I respect Warne more.

Ehsan, 600 is a small target. Think big. 700-750. How old is Murali? 31? 32? Spinners tend to go on for a long times.

i do think spinners have more longevity in their careers because its not so much wear and tear. still, being good for this long is just amazing.

Shame on ICC for allowing a chucker to come this far (becoming the highest wicket taker).
Its an insult to all hard-working legitimate bowlers.

Another "bowler" who makes me cringe is Shabbir Ahmed... this guy chucks through his teeth... will the ICC do anything about it...

weldone from wat i heard he said he is aiming for 650 :p

22.6 Muralitharan to Nkala, OUT: World record! 520 test wickets,
straigher one, pushed in the air to silly mid off, Jayawardene
makes no mistake and Muralitharan celebrates

chucked or not chucked, he's in the record books....
and i dont think anyone can topple him over....

unless ofcourse if shoaib remains fit to play.... :p

First Test, Harare, day three: Sri Lanka 541 beat Zimbabwe 199 & 102 by an innings and 240 runs!!!

Muttiah Muralitharan became the most successful bowler in the history of Test cricket as Sri Lanka beat Zimbabwe by an innings and 240 runs in Harare.

The 32-year-old surpassed West Indian Courtney Walsh’s career total of 519 victims when he had Mluleki Nkala caught at silly mid-off.

He also dismissed Alester Maregwede next ball as Zimbabwe were all out for 102, with Nuwan Zoysa claiming 5-30.

** ROAD TO A RECORD **

  • 1st wicket Craig McDermott (Aus) lbw, Colombo Sept 1992

  • 100th Stephen Fleming (NZ) bowled, Hamilton Mar 1997

  • 200th Dominic Cork (Eng) caught, The Oval Aug 1998

  • 300th Shaun Pollock (SA) bowled, Durban Jan 2001

  • 500th Michael Kasprowicz (Aus) bowled, Kandy Mar 2004

  • 520th Mluleki Nkala (Zim) caught, Harare May 2004

:dhimpak:

It was Sri Lanka’s biggest margin of victory in their 22-year Test history.

The result exceeded their innings and 215-run win over England in Colombo last December and was achieved with two days to spare.

Their bowlers wasted no time making inroads into the inexperienced Zimbabwe batting line-up after being bowled out for 541 during the morning session, a first innings lead of 342.

Zoysa removed Stuart Matsikenyeri (11) and Dion Ebrahim (two) to reduce them to 15-2 at lunch and three more wickets went down in successive overs following the resumption.

Brendan Taylor was superbly caught by a diving Muralitharan at leg gully for four off Chaminda Vaas and Zoysa then made short work of Tatenda Taibu and Elton Chigumbura.

Zimbabwe were in danger of total humiliation but Nkala and Maregwede temporarily halted the collapse with a stubborn stand of 45.

Maregwede had the temerity to twice slog Muralitharan over the leg-side for four as the spinner went through his variations in search of the record.

They survived for 13 overs before Nkala, on 24, prodded forward and gave a bat-pad catch to Mahela Jayawardene at silly mid-off, prompting the entire Sri Lankan team to surround a jubilant Muralitharan.

Prosper Utseya was bowled by Farveez Maharoof and there were further celebrations when Maregwede departed for 22 to the first ball of Muralitharan’s next over.

But they had to be cut short when he went off for treatment after damaging his hand in taking the catch.

Zoysa completed his first five-wicket haul when Blessing Mahwire was caught behind but Tinashe Panyangara hit a six and two fours in his 18 to take the total to three figures.

Seam bowler Zoysa was Sri Lanka’s other star performer

His stand with Doug Hondo (15 not out) was worth 30 when he was caught behind off Sanath Jayasuriya to bring the match to an end.

Muralitharan had earlier done his bit with the bat during the morning session as the tourists added 85 to their overnight score of 456-7.

He made 26 in a last-wicket stand of 45 with Zoysa before he was caught off Panyangara, who took 3-101 in his debut Test match.

it couldn’t have happened to a better player, well played murali’ a true magician he thoroughly deserves his name in the record books, a gr8 bowler, a gr8 man on ‘n’ off the field and a gr8 sportsmen!!!

Murali-mania grips Sri Lanka](Yahoo is part of the Yahoo family of brands.)

COLOMBO (AFP) - Sri Lanka’s president and prime minister led millions of fans here to congratulate star spinner Muttiah Muralitharan for breaking the world record for Test match wickets.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga said she was impressed by Muralitharan’s “courage and determination” in facing “challenges and adversaries,” a reference to being called for throwing by an Australian umpire.

“I join all Sri Lankans in expressing our pride and delight that you are the first Sri Lankan to establish a world record in Test cricket,” Kumaratunga said in a message sent to Muralitharan who is playing in Zimbabwe.

The controversial spinner affectionately known as Murali smashed through Courtney Walsh’s old record of 519 victims in Harare Saturday as Sri Lanka crushed Zimbabwe in the first Test by an innings and 240 runs.

He finished the game with match figures of 8-92 to take his career tally to 520.

“May you and the Sri Lankan cricket team have the ability to improve its position and take Sri Lanka’s name further in international fame,” said Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse.

SriLanka Cricket president Mohan de Silva said the record was even better because of the obstacles Muralitharan faced and vowed that the governing body of the sport here will “be a pillar of strength to him.”

Muralitharan was assessed by experts in Australia last month after he was reported for a suspect bowling action by match-referee Chris Broad after the third and final Test against Australia here in March.

A report has been sent to the International Cricket Council which is yet to make the findings public.

Sunday newspapers here devoted their entire sports front pages to Muralitharan’s record breaking feat.

“Murali on top of the world,” said the Sunday Observer. “King Murali” was the headline in the Sunday Island, while the Sunday Times said: “King Murali does it!”

Muralitharan’s parents who live in the central town of Kandy, 72 miles (112 kilometres) east of here, were jubilant as they watched television broadcast of their son play in Harare and set a new world record.

“I think I am the happiest mother in the world today,” said his mother, Lakshmi Muralitharan. “I didn’t think he would come this far. I never even thought he would play for the country, but once he started I knew he would do something, but not this.”

Muralitharan’s father, S. Muttiah, said he was overjoyed and expected his son to reach the 1,000-wicket mark if he continued to play.

“If he continues for a few more years, I am sure that he will go on to pick up 1,000 wickets in Test cricket,” Muttiah said adding that he was “disappointed” over the controversy surrounding his son’s bowling action.

His record-breaking achievement was witnessed by just 400 spectators at the Harare Sports Club, but Muralitharan refused to be drawn into the controversy over the make-up of the Zimbabwe team which contained five new caps after former skipper Heath Streak and his fellow white rebels refused to play.

“Zimbabwe has played the best available team they could have put out,” said Muralitharan, who will be looking to add to the tally when the second and final Test starts in Bulawayo on Friday.

He also knows his record may not stand for long. Australia tour Zimbabwe later this month with leg-spin legend Shane Warne, who is approaching Muralitharan’s record with 517 wickets.

Walsh backs Murali to reach 1,000 wickets](Yahoo is part of the Yahoo family of brands.)

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AFP) - West Indies pace legend Courtney Walsh believes Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan, who snatched his world Test wickets record, could take 1,000 victims before his career comes to an end.

“He could easily end up with between 800 and 1,000 Test wickets,” said Walsh whose record of 519 wickets was broken by the spin king in Sri Lanka’s first Test win against Zimbabwe in Harare on Saturday.

“To get 500 wickets in less than 90 Tests, I think he deserves whatever he gets,” Walsh told Radio Jamaica.

"He has been a tremendous bowler for Sri Lanka and he is bound to get wickets as long as he is playing.

“His strike rate is phenomenal. He deserves all the credit he is getting.”

Muralitharan is now poised for a lengthy battle with Australia’s Shane Warne, who has 517 wickets, to hang on to top spot.

“He is younger and because he is an off-spin bowler, I think he will play a little longer than Warne,” Walsh
