Way too late in replying — I joined long after you created this topic — but I want to commend you on this excellent thread. You make a convincing case for this interpretation, especially after pointing out how pre–Islamic poetry used the same techniques.

Nöldeke and E. H. Palmer seem to think that the letters could refer to initials of people who had the various fragments prefaced with the letters then incorporated into the Qur’an.
