Munafiq(een) - Neglected Element

So I was learning more about ISLAM and here’s what I found, may be helpful to those who do wish to correct themselves:

According to Sahih Bukhari, the Prophet said, "Whoever has the following four (characteristics) will be a pure hypocrite and whoever has one of the following four characteristics will have one characteristic of hypocrisy unless and until he gives it up.

  1. Whenever he is entrusted, he betrays.
  2. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie.
  3. Whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous.
  4. Whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent, evil and insulting manner."

The term Munafiq in Arabic and Urdu is primarily a non-religious term that refers to a person whos actions are different from and opposite to his thoughts, which he conceals. In the Qur’an sense the term refers to a person who does not have faith, but pretends to. “When the hypocrites come to thee, they say, ‘We bear witness that thou art indeed the Apostle of God.’ Yea, God knoweth that thou art indeed His Apostle, and God beareth witness that the hypocrites are indeed liars.” - (Qur’an 63:1).

Usually one muslim call another muslim, who have different interpretations of Islam, Munafiq.

The Qur’an has hundreds of ayat (verses) discussing Munafiqeen, referring to them as more dangerous to Muslims than the worst non-Muslim enemies of Islam, and it orders muslims to isolate them Hardly wherever they find them in 33.061. “The hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire: no helper wilt thou find for them.” - (Qur’an 4:145).

Re: Munafiq(een) - Neglected Element

I haven't seen number 4 as part of ahadith that I have read regarding the subject. Any references of this hadith?

Re: Munafiq(een) - Neglected Element

You bring up a very valid and often neglected point.
While we debate endlessly whether christians and jews are going to hell or not we conveniantly forget that verse of the Holy Quran.
First we have to ask ourself this question do we fit the criteria of a munafeq?

Re: Munafiq(een) - Neglected Element

Unfortunately, many of us including myself would easily fall into one or more of the categories mentioned above.

May Allah (SWT) forgive us all, guide us all to the Straight Path and keep us steadfast on it, ameen.

Todd, thanks for sharing. This will definitely serve as a good reminder to many of us, insha'Allah.

Captain1, the 4th one is quite often in the ahadith. I'm sure someone will be able to provide reference for it, insha'Allah.
