Police Raid Finds Crowned Ancient Mummy

QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistani Police said Sunday they had found a crowned ancient mummy, possibly of an Iranian queen, during a raid in the southwestern town of Quetta.
They said the mummy, estimated to be 2,500 years old, was found packed in a sealed box during a raid on the house of an “important personality” in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s Baluchistan province bordering Iran and Afghanistan.
Police declined to disclose the name of the “personality,” but said initial information suggested the mummy had been in the possession of someone in the port city of Karachi, who had been murdered.
There was no immediate information on where the mummy had originally come from and whether it was found during a mad rush of local people in the late 1960s and early 1970s to dig up old graves in Baluchistan’s Kharan border district.
Kharan had once been part of ancient Iran and it was believed that the jewelry of the old Iranian royal families was buried there.
The mummy recovered from the Quetta house was heavily laden with jewelry, including a crown and a golden plate at her chest, the police said.
They said Karachi police had taken custody of the body and were making investigations.
