Mumbai gunman asks Pakistan for legal aid.

Pakistani government should provide legal aid to the Pakistani suspect. Unless Pakistani government is saying that they have proof that he is not a Pakistani, in which case they should not.

** Mumbai gunman asks Pakistan for legal aid **

The sole gunman captured in last month’s terrorist attacks on Mumbai has written to Pakistani officials to ask for legal help after Indian lawyers refused to take his criminal case, police said Saturday.

Mohammed Ajmal Kasab wrote a letter on Thursday to the Pakistani consulate to request “legal aid”, said Rakesh Maria, Mumbai’s chief investigator. He also asked to meet with a representative from the consulate, Maria said.

The letter was forwarded to India’s government to relay to Pakistani officials, but it was unclear whether it had been delivered, Maria said. A number of Indian lawyers, including "a prominent group of Mumbai attorneys” have refused to defend Kasab against criminal charges amid outrage over the attacks. Police have revised the death toll from the attacks to 164 people. Nine gunmen also died in the siege.

Kasab is being held on 12 offences, including waging war against the country and murder, but has not yet been formally charged.

According to police, the 21-year-old Kasab said he was a Pakistani national and member of banned terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Islamabad has refused to acknowledge Kasab’s nationality, complaining that India has yet to furnish any evidence.

Re: Mumbai gunman asks Pakistan for legal aid.

Pakistani government should not provide any legal aid to someone caught in India in violence, there are hundreds of Pakistanis in other countries who could use Pakistan's legal help. If you are caught pants down then you don't belong to us, deal it yourself. Unless the guy claims "innocence" and that all the "confessions" were made up forcefully then Pakistan should help.

Re: Mumbai gunman asks Pakistan for legal aid.

talk about the living please.

this guy is asking for Pakistani govt help because in his mind he thinks Pakistan govt owes him that. If Pakistan govt provides such help it will be one more admission by them and therefore don't expect any such help

Not necessarily. Did you not know that he is a graduate of grade 4? Do you think he can write? I am sure someone VERY sincere and helping from Indian agencies wrote the letter for him, "advising" him etc. Lets not jump to conclusions without knowledge.

Re: Mumbai gunman asks Pakistan for legal aid.

I didn't write any new conclusions....just provided a viewpoint as to why the terrorist may think he can ask for legal aid from Pakistan.

The guy being a 4th grade pass or failure is irreleavant. DOn't you know people who have never stepped into a school yet can read and write better than many high schoolers? I know people in my own family in the two generations ago who never went to any school yet could calculate bank interest in their heads and who could write short novels for local magazines

Just like Indian media.

We are talking about a "laborer" here.

Re: Mumbai gunman asks Pakistan for legal aid.

I am sure you can distinguish between news, opinions, analysis and conclusions.

There is no proof that he is Pakistani.

yeah as long as u believe the weirdo who said kasav is his son; is not a pakistani or is one who is considered to be related in some ways to newly crafted word "non-state actors" and the pakistani channels who first reported the info are run by raw or whatever.... then yeah ur rite... and as a matter of fact no one will ever agree on his nationality... the poor guy might be cursing himself...

In India, graduates of Class 4 can write. Is that not the case in Pakistan ?:)

Correct ! Other than his own dad and his own villagers admitting he is one of them. And ye, dont forget the UK newspaper report...

If you can show me copy of the letter he wrote I can tell you whether it was actually a writing of 4-class graduate or someone else writing for him ;). I can bet that Indian govt provided the services of writing on his behalf.

yeah so that means he's indian then.

Re: Mumbai gunman asks Pakistan for legal aid.

Why should the gov of Pakistan be involved at all?

What right does Kasab have to ask for help from the government?

This guy did not ask for permission from the government while carrying out the attacks.
He acted individually at his will. He should be disowned by Pakistan. Let him rot in hell.

There should be no mercy shown for committing these types of crime.

yeh to zakhmon par namak chiraknay wali baat hai...

Re: Mumbai gunman asks Pakistan for legal aid.

I doubt it if this is true. The reason why it sounds more like something the Indian police would make up is because..

1) They know Pak embassy will not provide him with any assistance, since doing so will amount to admitting that hes a Pakistani.
2) If at all, Pak embassy agrees to provide him with assistance, they will obviously want access to him, and would want their lawyers to question him, which of course could open a pandora's box, either way.

Well, now the FBI is saying that Kasab is a Pakistani national.

Kasab is a Pakistani national, confirms FBI

Kasab is a Pakistani national, confirms FBI

American investigators who questioned Ajmal Amir Iman Kasab, the lone terrorist captured during the Mumbai attack, are convinced he is a Pakistani national and that the terrorist strike was planned and executed by the Lashkar-e-Tayiba, diplomatic sources said on Tuesday.

Investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation were given access to Kasab for nine hours and after questioning him, they came to the conclusion that he was a Pakistani national as contended by Indian authorities, the sources told PTI.

The sources, familiar with the probe being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s team dispatched to Mumbai, said American investigators were also convinced that the Mumbai attacks were intricately planned and directed by LeT leaders based in Pakistan.

“The investigators believe the attacks were planned, coordinated and directed from Pakistan by LeT leaders,” a source said.

These findings fit in with comments by top American leaders like Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Admiral Mike Mullen, the senior-most US military official, who have asked Pakistan to take quick action against ‘non-state actors’ based on Pakistani soil who were linked to the Mumbai attacks.

Though Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has ruled out allowing the British police to quiz the suspects Pakistan had detained in connection with the Mumbai attacks, the diplomatic sources said it would be hard pressed to take such a stance if the FBI made a similar request, as India had already given American investigators access to Kasab.

The diplomatic sources also provided other details of the FBI investigation that had convinced the US of the complicity of the LeT in the terrorist strike.
American investigators were able to extract details of calls made by the terrorists involved in the Mumbai attacks to their LeT handlers in Pakistan by using sophisticated Technology, to examine the burnt and damaged mobile phones of the attackers, the sources said.

These phones, which were damaged in gun battles between the terrorists and security forces, were provided to the FBI team by Indian law enforcement agencies, they said.

The US dispatched an investigating team to Mumbai as six Americans were among the 183 people killed in the attacks.

Kasab was captured shortly after he and another terrorist struck at a major railway terminus in India’s financial hub.

Indian officials said he was a member of the LeT and belonged to Faridkot village in Pakistan’s Punjab province.

Kasab’s father subsequently admitted to a Pakistani newspaper that the gunman whose pictures were beamed around the world by the media was his son.

Other residents of Faridkot have said that Kasab last visited the village about five to six months ago, when he told his mother he was going away for ‘jehad’.
The Pakistan government has said it is awaiting information and evidence from India to confirm the identity and nationality of Ajmal.

The sources also said the FBI investigators had found no evidence of linkages between the 26/11 attacks and the Inter Services Intelligence.

Re: Mumbai gunman asks Pakistan for legal aid.

^^ FBI was probably bribed by the Indian authorities to say that.

Guys, why go as far as FBI, Indian newJ paper say he is Paki he is Paki, PEROID… And if Indian newJ paper say that FBI say he is Paki then you better believe it.. See this ebidence is even sHtronger then DNA phingerprinting.

Re: Mumbai gunman asks Pakistan for legal aid.

Indians are so stupid ! I never believed that.
Under the circumstances if they (Indians) think that Pakistanis are stupid then fine.
When the war flares this notion will help Pakistan tremendously as this time we have no 'Bangali connection' on the contrary it will be 'mosad' connection to counter act.

Pakistan was not able to represent its caught fishermen in India waters for decades, why should Pakistan be Interested in a stupid alleged terrorist seeking legal aide.
Grow up Indian Guppies, Don't play the same old tune with us again.

Second thoughts, please keep on barking up this tree, as you never know !
