Mumbai disputes ‘rudest city’ tag

People in Mumbai are upset - their city has been ranked rudest in the world.

India’s financial capital came bottom in a survey by Reader’s Digest magazine to find which of 35 cities was most courteous. New York came top.

“This survey is an insult,” said one Mumbai resident Ritika Bajaj. “People here are accommodating and polite.”

Cities were set three courtesy tests. Many in Mumbai, including the India editor of Reader’s Digest, said the criteria were “too Western”.

The judges’ criteria were whether people opened doors for others in public buildings, whether they helped pick up papers dropped on a busy street and whether a shopkeeper said “thank you” when a purchase - big or small - was made.

Sixty such tests were performed in Mumbai.

Other Asian cities - Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul and Kuala Lumpur - also did badly. Zurich came a close second to New York and Toronto third.

‘Heart’

Anshuli Patil, who works at the German consulate in Mumbai, said the results were “very surprising”.

“People are very friendly and always helping others. I also find them very approachable,” she said.

Mumbai resident George Pereira says there may be rare instances when people are impolite, but that could not be applied to the city as a whole.

Advertising film-maker Prahlad Kakkar says when he first came to Mumbai years ago, he did find people rather rude.

"Coming as I did from the north, I was very surprised with the way in which people spoke to strangers. But you realise this is only on the surface and people here have a heart.

“I think Mumbai and New York are very similar in nature and if the latter ranked number one, then Mumbai is up there too.”

Mr Kakkar criticised the survey for using “Western” criteria to assess politeness.

Even the editor of the Indian edition of Reader’s Digest, Mohan Sivanand, agreed.

“I think the reason Asian cities have performed badly in the survey is because of cultural differences. People here express their gratitude in other non-verbal ways rather than actually saying the word,” he told the BBC.

"There was an instance when we bought something from a shopkeeper in Mumbai and he smiled instead of saying ‘thank you’. When asked why he didn’t say the words, he replied his smiling at customers means the same thing.

Mr Sivanand adds that at least 19 of the 60 Mumbai respondents were polite to researchers. "If these 19 are to be translated in terms of the city’s population, then 32% or more than 4.5 million people are polite in Mumbai.

“That is more than the combined populations of some of the cities that ranked high up in the courtesy list.”

The criteria really is westren...

I bet America would be the last on the courtesy list if the criteria were: How many people wish each other a peaceful day i.e. Salam Alaikum.

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

First of all, it's a stupid survey.

Bombay was ranked the 35th nicest city, not the "rudeist one." They should be happy.

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

Pakistanis are just as bad... I to this day have never gotten a thank you from a Pakistani I held the door open for.. .On the other hand, Pakistanis will surprise you with their genorosity sometimes.
This survey does seem flawed.

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

^^ You guys probably are clueless. If the way Indians interact with each other is anything to go by, heck everyone of their cities deserves to be called rude. I've been around all the major cities in Pak and people are generally polite and nice, from the taxi/rikshaw walaaz to the folks givin you your subway sandwich in a swanky shop. We HAVE to know our positives. Anyway this thread is about Mumbai, and if its there, it deserves to be.

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

Oh please.
How many of those people that say “Salam Alaikum” actually know what it means let alone mean it?

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

Interesting..

my family's from mumbai..and yeah..people can be rude at times...life in mumbai is anything but slow..and if you're slow..well..that's tough. but..when you are in residential areas or in shops..people are generally VERY friendly.

it's kinda like nyc..life is just reallly hectic...people don't have time for formalities and to act all fake nice. they have tough exteriors and thats just the way it is. you go with the flow and don't expect too much.

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

People from Bombay are definitely rude, most south Indians are very polite and well behaved but i can't say the same about people from Mumbai. Their language is quite rude and most of them behave like gangsters.

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

i think lahore is the nicest, must be better then new york.

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

Rude... hmm.. no diff than Hyderabad or Karachi I say... but definitely the wettest city I have ever been to.. just came back form there this morning, was there for the weekend, it was raining when I landed there on Saturday morning and it was still raining when I left Monday afternoon after 12 hours of delays and cancellations….people at the places I went to seem to act and behave the same as any other desi land ! … mind you I did not go to too many places, thanks to the wonderful rain…

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

London should also be right up there.its the rudest city i've ever been to,full of cold and arrogant people,i dont know whether thats because of the 60% non-english who live there or the english.New york is also bad.
Boston,San Jose,San Francisco are probably the nicest.i once had a minor car accident in san jose, the guy whos car i collided with started apologizing and was very polite...coming from karachi i thought the guy was gonna start arguing and fight, but i was surprised.

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

Lahore's nice alright. But 'Pindi/Isb take the cake. People r pretty nice and mostly keep to themselves. Very small town-ish ambience.

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

well the nicest & sweetest city is al khobar…
but no one mentioned it here…:smilestar:

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

Many Northeners think Mumbai language is rude, because the mother tongue of Mumbaikars is not Hindi but mostly Marathi or Gujarati. Mumbai is also the capital of Maharashtra whose official state language is Marathi. Being cosmopolitan there is a language called Mumbaiiya Hindi which is a mixture of Hindi, Marathi and English and this is not a very polished language.

Most Indians would consider Mumbaikars very cool and hardworking with few attitude problems unlike Delhi which is more status conscious.

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

I would have to say Moscow, Russia the people there are as cold and bland as the weather.

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

My impresssion of Mumbai when I visited it (compared to Delhi).

Whole families live in tiny apartments, the buildings are filthy from outside, with clothes lines hanging out of each window. The roads are full of pot holes and the auto ricksaw or taxi had to zig - zag to avoid falling in them.

The people were always dressed ordinarily, mostly wearing chappels even to work. There is a constant stink on the sides of the roads due to rubbish thrown around. The sewerage system is a disaster and big floods with rubbish floating on them are everywhere.

Except for a few upmarket area's - the rest were as above.

Yet when I talk to Mumbaians they think they live in the best city in India !!!??

Re: Mumbai (Bombay) ranked as the rudest city in the World

Of all cities in the world, I guess people from Sialkot are politest while people from Burewala are rudest.
