Multiple Sclerosis

Does anyone here have, or know of anyone that suffers from MS? I really need to speak with someone that has personal experience of MS. Please tell me a bit about it, either here or via PM.

Mucho Gracias :flower1:

Re: Multiple Sclerosis

I cant tell you from personal experience, but i have seen many people with MS. Here is some basic info about it.
Its basically a demylenating disease of the Central nervous system. The most common patient you will see will be a young female (about 16-21 years old) in her reproductive years. It is of unknown etiology, but most people believe that it is either immune related or viral related. The intersting thing about is that as the distance from the equator increases, the incidence of the disease increases too.
The most commong symptom is weakness. The patient usuallly presents with double vision ( as optic nerve gets demylenated) and weakness. So patient gets weak, is admitted in the hospital and after resting for a little bit the patient gets better and starts feeling better. You neve know when the patient wil have exacerbation again. In acute exacerbation, the treatment is corticosteroids. To prevent exacerbation usually interferon is used(which is a very expensive drug).
The way to diagnose is to do MRi of the head or the history can be suggestive of it too.
Basically its a chronic desease with no cure. You can only try to relieve symptoms or try that it you dont get acute exacerbation.
If you have any specific questions let me know.

Re: Multiple Sclerosis

Hi, thanks for that info. I have a few questions for you:

Is it possible for a MS patient to live a 'normal' life?

How often do these episodes occur?

Is current treatment (usually steroids I believe) of benefit?

If someone has recently been diagnosed with it, what steps can be taken to prevent these episodes from occuring?
Does eyesight weaken every time the patient has optic neuritus?
Do all patients end up having mobility problems?
Does MS cause probs with infertility?

I've got more questions once you've got thru these :p
