Re: Multiple personality disorder
** what exactly does this mean?**
Like Sarah pointed out is is also known as dissociative identity disorder. It means that two or more distinct personalities exist in the same individual. In 50% of cases, there can be more than 10 different personalities. The change from one personality to another happens suddenly - usually during stress.
The "host personality" is the one which has control of the body for the greatest period of time.
The other personalities can differ a lot in intelligence, speech, vocabulary, accent, speech , even handwriting!
is this for real??
Yes it is. Maddy brought up jinns- although that is a possibility , its another issue. And I do believe multiple personalities exist - too many studies done , we have enough valid evidence.
It usually happens in early childhood, but is rarely diagnosed before the teen years.
Causes for the most part:
Severe physical and/or sexual abuse.
Split personalities are a way of coping with the distress and trauma.
is there a wide range of signs/symptoms or some solid tests etc. for diagnosis...???
Well a psycholgist is able to diagnose the patient. And yes the disorder can be treated often by psychotherapy.
Hope this helps.
