The UN finally honoured the now very famous Mukhtaran Mai in NY.
Few months ago when she was scheduled to go Shaukat Aziz’s appointments at the UNHQs were scheduled for the same day and it was said Pakistan had requested her appointments to be rescheduled. This had invited a lot of criticism.
At the UN Mukhtaran apparently portrayed a positive image and handled the limelight well.
There’s been some talk of a movie on her life…? And her book is also to be launched in Pakistan this year. any updates on that?
Her role as a rights’ activist without criticizing the govt (atleast at the UN) being her sole objective as is for many activists, is constructive and nice to see. The UN under secy gen for comm Shashi Tharoor praised PM Aziz for his support and Mukhtaran herself refrained from jumping with the controversy about Gen Musharraf’s alleged remarks on rape victims from few months ago.

*"My slogan is: ‘End oppression with education,’ she added, noting that after her efforts in her rural village, attitudes there have changed quite dramatically.
Mai thanked the Government of Pakistan for all the help extended to her. As a result, she said, there is electricity in her remote village, roads have been constructed and a police post set up. For the past four years, no rape has been reported and domestic violence was also on the decline. "*
