Me and shweetdreamz had the honor of meeting this lady today. Here r some pix, details later.
** Purvi Shah from Saakhi, which cosponsored the event, speaking. **
** Unable to read and write three years before, Ms Mai reads a statement that she prepared herself. **
** Sitting with a friend and coworker, Naseem Akhtar (in white) and in the orange is Amna Buttar, the president of the Asian American Network against Abuse of Human Rights. Robina Niaz, exec director of turning point for women and families, acted as translator.. **
** After the session ended, the crowd gathered onstage to congratulate mai, to speak to her and to take pictures. **
Rizwan, I didn't get a chance to chat with her, (how cud i , she was surrounded and I didnt hav anything else to say to her), i just said congratulations and gave her a hug :D as did everyone else...it was a combined question btw me and shweetdreamz, we asked her how was the attitude in her village now.... how hav things changed, are there those who r against her etc and does she see any change in her lifetime... she replied that not a singel woman in her village has been raped. She didn't really answer hte last part of our question, does she see any great change in her lifetime.... i found her responses to be very general, nothing too specific... we weren't allowed toask about her personal life, marriage, the emotional trauma or the event itsself which is fair enough no problem.. but then there were those who went off on other topics, bringing up Iraq and the earthquake.
