Mai may not have done the smartest thing but didn't do anything illegal or immoral by marrying this guy, as it appears that the arrangement was made with the consent of all the parties involved and didn't violate any moral or legal code. She shouldn't feel compelled to come up with arguments like 'I did it on humanitarian grounds' 'to save marriages' since this line of reasoning is going to make her position rather untenable.

As far as I know, in islam, men can't have a second wife just because they are attracted to or love another woman. The only way the man can marry a second woman is if the first wife can't have kids or can't have sex (usually due to an injury or sickness). However, ofcourse the reasons as to why a man can have a second wife is distorted and the only thing they care about is the fact that Islam actually allows multiple marriages without acknowledging the conditions.
