A roadside bomb killed four Israeli soldiers when it blew up a tank near a Jewish settlement in the northern part of the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army says.
Eyewitnesses said the tank burst into flames after it drove over the bomb near the Jewish settlement of Dugit on Saturday.
The military censor had delayed publication of the details until relatives had been informed.
The militant Palestinian group Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack.
“Our brigades managed to detonate a large bomb under a Zionist army Merkava tank at 8.30 am (0530 GMT) north of Beit Lahia,” said a statement sent to news agencies.
It added the attack was revenge for the deaths of two Hamas activists killed near Beit Lahia by Israeli troops earlier this week.
Palestinians said they saw black smoke rising from the tank and soldiers with water hoses trying to douse the flames.
Israeli helicopter gunships helped the rescue efforts, the witnesses said.
Palestinian militants have destroyed a number of Israeli Merkava-3 tanks with roadside bombs in the Gaza Strip during the current intifada.
Last March Palestinian militants destroyed a tank killing three soldiers.
They say tanks are a symbol of the Israeli occupation of their lands.
4 down, approximately 4 million to go… unless they leave voluntarily.

Inshallah Allah will help our Muslim Bros fight the Isralies.
look, both sides are being stupid in this. Ariel Sharon is being a jackass and the suicide bombers of Palestine are fooling no one. Sharon should retire and vanish, Arafat must be exiled and then may be new leadership can talk peace.
Those Christian militias who did the killings should be bought to trial,
I agree.

And of course the man who made it all possible for that genocide to happen and his army? Or did your devotion for that man and his policies let you forget that fact?
btw, what flawed logic led to the Qana genocide later?
