We all know that this month holds a very high pirority in Shi’is. But as a Sunni what is required from us by Allah. I am kind of confused about this. I have Shi’is friends who are really respecting this month but i have Sunni friends who just think of this as a first month of islamic calendar.
I am Sunni and i have asked couple of people about the significiant of this month. but i did not get any valid answer. Since we believe in the sunna of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), what He(PBUUH) has ordered us to do. Can a sunni tell me what they usually do in this month in detail?
In my family we fast on the ninth and tenth of muharram.
I have tired googling this question but did not get the answer.

Shia's respect for this month is due to the martyrdom of Imam Hussain rah. As this sad incident happened LONG time after Messenger pubh, there will not be a Hadees or Quranic verse related to Imam Hussain's martyrdom.
There are some traditions about Moharram being sacred month for reasons OTHER than Imam Hussain. But those have been overcome by the later events.
As a Sunni one should remember this month as a period that is filled with sadness for the brutal Taliban-style killing of Messenger pbuh's decedents.
We should also remember that as Muslims we should avoid hatred and intolerance that resulted in the death of Imam Hussain rah.

there is no Quranic verse but there certainly are hadith
just because it happened long after Prophet does not mean that prophet did not predict it
Prophet made many predictions regarding death of certain sahaba and their circumstances LONG before they happened are all these hadith fabricated then according to you ?
One hadith that predicts Hussain b ALi's martyrdom is narrated by the sahabi Anas b Harith

why blame taliban ?....yazid was no fanatic nor was he a religious figure

.
How can a poor poster on GS decide if a hadees is fabricated or not. Scholars themselves have struggled with Hadees business and that's why we have sahih hadees vs. zaeef hadees etc. etc.
Just remember that Messenger pbuh should be treated as a Messenger (who brings a message), and not someone who wrote prophecies. Future's knowledge is limited to Allah and Allah alone. No human being (including anbiah) really knows what will happen in the future.

Yazid's tribal army committed brutal murder of opponents, just like Taliban are doing now.
If Yazid was no fanatic, he would not have sent army to hunt down essentially a civilian caravan. For crying out loud, Imam Hussain was not leading an army, he was traveling with HIS FAMILY.

as per my knowledge the tradition of fasting on 9th and 10th muharram in centuries old even before prophet muhammed PBUH
in times of prophet moses bani isreal got rid from the pharoah. so these fasts r because of that :)

astagfurillah
Prophet made many prophecies which were given to him as a special benefit from God and are signs of his Prophethood
he was a man like others but blessed with divine knowledge but this new fitna has been born which treats him like a postman and disregards his sunnah

yazid was not fanatic
he was cool calculating ummayyad merchant like his father he just made some rash decisions which led to disaster .....yazid tried to blame it all on his subordinates but thanks to jurists his true character is not hidden from people
BTW, sunni aalim Allama Tahir Al-Qadri has held some majaalis on the shahadet of Imam Hussain (as). (Videos available HERE). He even encourages his listeners to weep on the hardships of Prophet’s (s) grandson.
It is another thing that ever since he openly started talking about Ahl-e-Bait (as) from the stage, he has been criticized and disliked by some certain groups among sunnis.
^ both the words "sunni" and "aalim" r not very much suitable for tahir-ul-qadri....
and whoever, being a muslim, says that he has never heard of the shahadat of imam hussain (ra), u can almost be certain that he is lying....
and being in syria if one says that then u'd be a fool to believe him....

Absolutely! From BDesh to Afghanistan + Iran and onwards to Lebanon, the whole "Quran belt" knows about Imam Hussain's shahadat even from the street knowledge. Any so-called Alim cannot in his right mind say that he never heard about Imam Hussain's shahadat for 10 years.
Sunnis are in majority, and most of them share the loss and resulting sadness of the cold blooded murder of Imam Hussain and most of his extended family.

Not being a fan of Qadri, but your statement may be off.
I don’t see anything that Shaykh Habib Ali says in connection with the thread’s title..
but what he says is 100% correct! In this video he’s talking about those wahabis who have taken control of arabia by using violence and are now on a mission to eradicate the sunnah.
Here is something about this scholar:
Habib Ali is a young master of tasawwuf and a scholar in Shafi fiqh. His noble lineage extends through the line of as-Sayyid al-Habib Imam Ahmad ibn 'Isa al-Muhajir, son of as-Sayyid al-Habib 'Isa ibn Muhammad, son of as-Sayyid al-Habib Muhammad an-Naqib, son of Imam 'Ali al-'Uraydi son of Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq son of Imam Muhammad al-Baqir son of Imam 'Ali Zaynu’l 'Abidin ibn Husayn son of Sayyidush-shuhadaa Imam Husayn ibn 'Ali ibn Abi Talib son of Sayyidina ‘Ali al-Murtada, and Sayyidatun nisaa Fatima az-Zahra the daughter of’ Habib u’l A’zam, The Leader of all the Prophets, Sayyidina Muhammad ibn 'Abdillah (sallalaahu alayhi wasalam).
mash’Allah, I would love to one day sit in the company of this great scholar!

I agree with this, anyone who believes what that syrian imam said is ignorant. Every arab child knows about Imam Hussain (ra).
but I would question you as to how you derive to the conclusion that Shaykh Tahir-ul-Qadri is not a scholar?
