Is it more gunaah to watch TV during Moharram? My mom wont let us turn the TV on or anything, when I said we are not Shiay she gave me a long lecture about Imam Hossein (as)'s shahaadat and what the Ahl-e Bayt (as) had to go through and that beating oneself like Shias is wrong but we should also show respect for Aal-e Mustafa (s).
I understand, I do respect Imam Hossein (ra) and hate yazeed the dog but is it really neccesary to have anneversaries? I mean, should we do the same on each day of the week he was killed, or specific time every day? Besides he (as) was martyred and is alive, so why the ‘mourining’?
Muharram is a month to commemorate Imam Hussein's great sacrifice that basically injected a whole new life into Islam that had been hijacked by Banni Ummaya, i.e. Yazid and ancestors.
Why we cry rather than rejoice?
When our beloved Prophet (pbuh) was told of this tradgedy by Hazrat Gibreil he shed tears too and foretold of this great sacrifice to his Ahlay Bayt.
There was never an indication by the Prophet (pbuh) that we should mourn over ANYONE's death.
Muharram is a month of great significance to Muslims because it was in Muharram that Islam first left the Arabian peninsula and went as far as 'Habsh' and then proceceeded further. It teaches us that Islam is a religion for the whole mankind. Moreover, the prophet's 'Hijrah' marks many milestones in the growth of Islam. It is a time to be celebrated.
There have been many martyrs in the Muslim history and we honor and respect them equally. But to say that you shouldn't watch TV during the first 10 days of Muharram when you watch it all year long is rubbish. It's just a cultural thing rather than religious.
