The sad part is that most Muslims today in general have forgotten this history as well. They actually believe that Islam can only be spread through force or by the state sponsorship, or that non-Muslims, especially Jews are to distrusted and they cannot hold important positions in government, and the notion that the verse about having no compulsion in religion applies has limitations etc.
