So me being not so informed of incidences in our religion, came across this incident in my philosophy of religion class. We were discussing miracles, and our professor brought up the incident when Muhammad(saw) splitted the moon. I never actually heard of this incident honestly, even form family members or anything. After doing some research, It is said that Muhammad(Saw) split the moon in half, to prove to people that he is the prophet? Some scholars disagree with this incident’s interpretation as they say that Muhammad(saw) could not perform miracles and the verse in Quran refers to the day of judgement when the earth will end and the moon will be split-ted. Scientifically, they have some pics of Rocky belt, a line in moon which some people say is the sign of the moon being split in half.
Now this whole thing confused me, I always thought that Muhammad(saw) did not perform miracles, Allah(Swt) made him as normal as any human being to give a great example of a prophet and how we can follow him. Whats your Input on it? excuse if I said anything wrong.

[Qamar 54:2] And when they see a sign, they turn away and say, “Just a customary magic!”

^ I actually haven't, but the verse you quoted kind of refers to the last day of judgement no? Or did our prophet really did perform miracles?

If you read the whole translation, you see that Quran is talking about nations of several prophets denying the miracles and/or prophet hood of those prophets. I think that split of moon is referring to the times of Prophet 
and not to the day of judgment.

و انشق القمر is in the past tense and not future tense.
Prophet Mohammad (saww) albeit being walking/talking like normal human being performed many miracles in his life. Some of them are his travel to skies, event of Mubahila against the Christian priests, his prophecies regarding events such as the defeat of the Roman empire or individuals such as Aas ibn Wa’il and many more.

^lil_ash, if you get hold of a classic biography of the life of the Prophet (saww) then you will see reports of him (saww) performing miracles in thousands right from the time of his birth. However concealed they might be but signs of many of his miracles are still present.

becareful if you intented to learn more about islam because theres other religions represented on these forums, some of them try to camouflage their talk as if its coming from islam. they push polytheist ideas

Miracles are performed ONLY **"by the PERMISSION of ALLAH"**** and that means Allah is doing that special thing thru the prophets. if you believe in Allah then these supernatural happenings are JUST happenings...Allah CAN do anything. Jesus said that when he was in his cradle and spoke to the onlookers...he said..."i'll bring back back to life from dead and i'll cure the lepers...*WITH the PERMISSION of Allah*".
***NO prophets EVER claimed that they DO it on their OWN! *

Both views have been accepted. Splitting of moon may be a part of day of judgment also. The verse maybe talking about past and future,.. both.

In addition to the above replies, it is proven from various books/narrators that before migration from Makkah, Abu Jahal, Walid bin Mughaira and A’aus bin Qatil alongwith many pagans gathered and asked Prophet Muhammad :
If you are a true Prophet then can you split the moon into two?
Prophet Muhammad said: "If I split the moon then will you believe (convert)?
They said: Yes.
Than Prophet Muhammad prayed to Almighty Allah SWT Who accepted the dua. And when Prophet Muhammad pointed at the moon, it splitted into two.
Then our Prophet Muhammad called pagans (by their names) be witness, be witness. Abu Jahal said He (the Prophet ) did magic on us. So when any visitors visit them outside of Makkah, these pagans ask whether they have seen splitting of moon or not but all visitors to Makkah answered in affirmation.

Narrated Anas bin Malik: The people of Mecca asked Allah’s Apostle to show them a miracle. So he showed them the moon split in two halves between which they saw the Hiram’ mountain.

There was a rumour that when Neil Armstrong went on the moon he saw a divided line there. Can any one confirm if that happened or was it just a rumour?

^ yes, there is a line in the middle of the moon dividing it in half. hence the belief that the moon was once split in half.

Do people here understand urdu, how many? If some do I can post some darse quran videos to help understand the quran better. Otherwise I need to post long posts to explain things in detail and that may not be acceptable on this forum.
Islam has been turned into fiction, myth, magical stories, mysteries and superstition but to dispel all nonsense ummah needs to learn a lot and information is mostly available in urdu. So if people cannot understand urdu then tough luck.

Hazrat Muhammd SAW performed this miracle by the order of ALLAH and this was also shown to Abu Juhal but he still didn't believed in Islam and died on kufr because of his arrogance read Surah Qamar
