kewl.... :)
Forget it Roman, you’re all talk and stall. ![]()
I think they may be a slight exaggeration depicting the times of the mughal empire. They're meant to be artistic, and I think its a certain kind of painting - a bit porno if you ask me.
One thing I can never figure is that the Mughal Empire comes in for so much stick from Indians, yet most Indian restaurants are based on a Mughal theme.
That is because you clowns can only eat at halaal restaurants. GO to South Indian restaurants, Bengali restaurants. You will see Chola paintings. WOnderful Batik prints…
Also, stop eating in Dhabas. pata nahin..kahan kahan sey aajaatey hain..uncultured sots!! ![]()
The Mughal paintings are actually in the same vein as the Herat school of islamic miniature paintings. You know th eone..where the persian masters spent years rearing their apprentices. It is unfortunate that you have had such a limited exposure to Indian Art. IN particular islamic miniatures.
Art is expression. What the hell did you think it was? We should expect muslims in particular to deride such art because art itself has been limited from a religious perspective in Islam. From the basic tenets of the religion, creating something is an offense to allah, as he is the only creator. This thinking has handicapped muslim artistic thought since the beginning. How do you think the miniatures came into being. painting lifelike/lifesize depictions of humans, animals etc, particularly with using live mmodels was deemed haraam in Islam. Therefore, while th restof the world went on with expression, true to life depiction of man, beast, surroundings. The islamic msters were handcuffed to only imagining it. there in lies the rub.
Sprry, I think it came out wrong… ![]()
hmmm hmmm... i'll leave them up for.. hmmm ahem.. educational purposes..
P.S. Matsui this is about Mughal art in Indian restaurants.. you're probably looking for another Forum with your comments on art in Islam or the lack thereof.
Babag: I would recommend we leave it up. Art is a lot more than pretty pictures or not so pretty pictures. I would hope some lateral thinking is also allowed among those a little more cultured.
Matsui brings up another interesting point. Almost all of the Muslims in the world would be greatly offended if some painter would to paint Mohammad. However, they won't have any beef with Michaelangelo's "Creation of Adam" where God is touching Adam's hand. If you really look at it, monotheist religion is a big pie (Judaism, Christianity, Islam all are pieces of a big pie). The God is common among them but the division of religion has narrowed down to following the prophets, not God. So Jews won't have any problem if someone says anything about Mohammad but they won't allow anything about Moses.
Followers are not to blame for this. The way religion has been structured and revealed, it follows the concept of 'ummah'. It's like a regime per prophet. Moses has his own followers, Mohammad his own, and so does Jesus.
PS-
Even though it was a good point in terms of paintings, bigots like Matsui only focus on Muslim beliefs and find excuses to put down Islam. Islam is not the only religion with which you can find 'faults' with.
Roman chanda, it was actually a resonse to the idiocy through out the thread which has people saying terms like "porno-like"..drawing parallels to some kind of cultural attributes to India ala funguy, degas..where they have neither the expereince nor a modicum of understanding of what those pieces are about.
I can guarantee you 90% of these types have never studied or learned about this aspect of the Islamic culture..let alone Indian art. Yet, try to exhibit some moral superiority. So don't pontificate and assume my anti-muslimsness.
Now play along and write something trite and boring.
Roman, Here is some art with common punjabi mena dn women in it.

What an absolutely delightful composition! Thanks …wonderful wonderful wonderful
those are absolutely beautiful ChanMahi.... i really liked the first one :)
Chann ji, tell me these are all Sikhnis. Please?
Roman, most of these are Lahorans as seen by the Sikh artist. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.;)
Channji, in that case...should one be in front of the jhula or behind it?
Oh my God, that’s a tandoor!!! I just realized that…Chann ji i remember you sending me a couple of these, the one TomSawyer pointed out is delightful! Thanks so much.
Actually, I'm not sure if it's the traditional tandoor. The only grounds-up tandoor I've seen are the ones where you bake naan. The rotis when are dungeon-in-the-ground sort of tandoor.
kitsch - to the extreme.
