My parents tell me they went to India to watch this epic! I have heard so many stories about it!
The interesting thing about this movie is that this movie took so long to make that the started to have colour movies till the half of the movie was made, so half of this movie is in black and white and half is in colour!
I (had) saw it with my parents when they rented it. Actually was very very good. Better than the movies (songs) we got nowadays....
Abu told me he had to sleep outside for the night and so on just to get the ticket in Lahore.

this is my all time favourite movie! wah! kya baat hai. Excellent script, great acting, beautiful leads [Dilip and Madhubhala aka Yusuf Khan and Begum Mumtaz Jahan Delhvi :], stunning direction, amazing sets, fantastic songs..aur dialogue..wah! kya kehne hai! Perfect urdu. I watch this film just to remind myself how wonderful Urdu as a language is. Subhan Allah!
There are SO many classic scenes. Madhubhala’s initial entrance as the statue, the feather kissing scene between Anarkali and Shehzada Salim…too much! Prithvi-raj Kapoor’s acting as Akbar…this film has it all. It is a monument to classical Indo-Muslim culture above all. It cost an amazing amount of money to make [which is why only two songs were shot in colour and the rest was shot in b & w]…
the Urdu in this film was so “pure” that many people who were used to Hindi couldn’t understand it and complained ke this film is in Persian!!!
I cannot resist describing this particular scene [Anarkali’s entrance (the sublime Madhubhala].
A sculptor in Akbar’s kingdom persuades Madhubhala to pretend she is a lifeless statue so that he can fulfil his promise to the king of producing a statue which is matchless; this plan is overheard by the Queen’s chief lady-in-waiting who is in love with the prince.] The “statue” is readied and the lady-in-waiting persuades the King and prince that the statue which is covered should be unveiled by firing an arrow at it, thus removing the veil. The KIng agrees. Prince Salim fires the arrow at the statue {Madhubhala) and the tension grows. He hits the top of the veil and it falls off revealing a beautiful statue of a female [madhubhala]. All are entranced by the life-like quality of the statue! Dialogue ensues about “yaqeenan sang-taraash ka dawah sach thaa..” As Akbar, Saleem and the main kaneez and the Queen are talking the statue suddenly does a kornish to the King! All are amazed! “Kya afsaanay haqiqat mein badal sakte hain” is one of the words of Akbar.
“Naacheez but nahin insaan hai”
“Insaan ko but ban-ne par kis ne majboor kiya”
“Aalam panaaH ki sultanat ke aik khud-daar sang-taraah ne”
“Yaqeenan sang-taraah ka fun qaabil-e-daad hai”
“Lekin tum teer chalte waqt khamosh kyon rahi?”
“kaneez yeh dekhna chahatee thi ke afsaanay haqeeqat mein kaisay badalte hain!”

an interesting thing with mughal-e-azam is that hero, dilip kumar does not sing a single song. apparently director made it clear to music director naushad 'woh hindustan ka honewala badshah hain, woh gana wan nahing gayega..' naushad made some 15 songs for movie, many of which were lost in editing. unfortunately they are lost forever since none has made separate recording of them.

I haven't seen it but i've got a video of it. Its supposed to be really good. I saw the set and it is absoloutley BRILLIANT. What i wanna know is how they made it.
