Mughal Darbar

It’s a joyful experience to hold a real urdu book in your hands and read it. It’s very hard for someone living in a smalltown USA, to get hold of a printed copy of an urdu book. I ordered online and waited one full month for the book to come from Pakistan.

It’s a PhD thesis turned into an urdu book by Dr. Mubarak Ali. The book started with how kingdom setups evolved, and what kings were to their people. Using that as a foundation, he talked about how kingdom setup was justified by Islamic scholars, just to kosherize the luxurious lifestyles of Muslim kings of the time. Later on he started talking about the lifestyles of Mughal Emperors.

I am in the middle of the book, and I want to be honest that reading about the materialistic lifestyle of these emperors just boils my blood. It’s a shame that our history portrays these greedy robbers as heroes.

If you have read this book, share your thoughts. I will add some more thoughts once I finish the book.

Can you scan few interesting events and post them here?

Sure. I will inshallah soon

Re: Mughal Darbar

I think modern day Arab kings are another example. So much wealth can be used in so many better ways...

Re: Mughal Darbar

At least we don't consider the modern day Arab kings as our heroes

Re: Mughal Darbar

We don't? We name a lot of things in country using Arab kings and their names. Maybe not our heroes but my point was Muslim leaders haven't really changed much.

Re: Mughal Darbar

Agree with this…tell me how many families that migrated to SA and had kids there didn’t name the boys Faisal, Fawad or Fahad…

Can someone suggest a good English language equivalent on this subject?

Muzna, because it was originally a thesis, he has a long list of references after every chapters. He has referred some English authors too. Let me see if I can find something for you

Re: Mughal Darbar

I haven’t read this particular book by Mubarak Ali, but from his other books on Mughal era and from books by other writers like Sibt e Hassan, Mughals extravagance is not a hidden aspect in Indo-Pak history. Every prince / princess got funds to build some building. Mughal dishes like lab e sheereen, mutanjan are extra expensive even to the standards of living we have today. William Dalrymple’s book ‘The Last Mughal’ starts with the details of extravagant dowry from a pensioned king :bummer:

Re: Mughal Darbar

I'll see if I can find this one: William Dalrymple's book 'The Last Mughal'
Thanks muq!
