COLOMBO: Former Test player Mudassar Nazar is being considered for the position of director of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Well placed sources told ‘The News’ that Mudassar had already given interviews and spoken in detail to the top PCB officials about how he would run the NCA if appointed as the director.
“He has made visits to Lahore from Dubai and the United Kingdom (UK) and met with the Board officials who see him as a top contender for the job,” one source said.
Mudassar, 49, who played 76 Tests and 122 One-day Internationals, has remained coach of the Pakistan senior and A teams since his retirement and also coached Kenya’s national side last year for a brief period.
The PCB Ad-hoc Committee, during its next meeting later this month, is expected to give approval to the appointment of successful candidates for the posts of director academy and six coaching positions at the NCA which will be re-launched in April with a new syllabus, administration and objectives.
The coaching programmes at the NCA have been suspended for the last few months by the Director Cricket Operations, Saleem Altaf who has been told by the Ad-hoc Committee to draw up a fresh plan for the academy and make new appointments of professional and qualified coaches.
The Board, according to the source, received around 45 applications for the various positions with many of the interested candidates being former
Test players, Mudassar among them.
“Among the other applicants, former Test captain Mushtaq Mohammad, Shahid Mahboob, Rashid Khan, Haroon Rasheed, Iqbal Sikander etc are also under consideration for various postings.”
The source said the committee, at its next meeting, would also finalise the appointment of a fielding coach who can come and work for short periods with the Pakistan team. “His work will start in the training camp that would be set up for the tour of England,” he added.
