WASHINGTON - The Senate on Wednesday rejected a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, dealing a defeat to President Bush and Republicans who hope to use the measure to energize conservative voters on Election Day. Supporters knew they wouldn’t achieve the two-thirds vote needed to approve a constitutional amendment, but they had predicted a majority of votes. Instead, they fell one short, 49-48.

As if all the problems in the world are solved already.

This was just an election year stunt. The last time Bush/Rove racked up this issue was in 2004 and milked it successfully to win the elections. 2006 is again an election year. I don't think Bush expected this issue to get anywhere anyway, but he just wanted to reaffirm his commitment to the right. The immigration issue is much more volatile for this election year.
