MSN Messenger - problems receiving audio files

Someone please help :frowning:

I can receive pictures perfectly fine, no problems at all. Its just that when someones sends me an .mp3 file, it transfers completely but when i click on it, it fails to open and gives me the following error. At first it was an intermittent problem, some mp3s came thru, while others didn’t but now it always happens. Anyone have a clue whats going on?

Oh and the files are not saved in the “my recieved files” folder, so I can’t locate them either.

Re: MSN Messenger - problems receiving audio files

the file is prolly corrupted. It prolly got viruses or sumthin. If u wana locate it just go to search and type the file name. If u still dont find it, go to temporary internet files

Re: MSN Messenger - problems receiving audio files

just plain mp3 file. It is the Windows firelwall in combination with the new Messenger messing up and preventing to receive certain files.

There are other ways of receiveing files.

You will either have to disable the windows firewall and also the messenger receive file protection, or have it sent via email or something.

Re: MSN Messenger - problems receiving audio files

or you can get the person to rar/zip it and send it to you. It will work fine then.

Re: MSN Messenger - problems receiving audio files

good try :cb:

Re: MSN Messenger - problems receiving audio files

This has to do with Microsoft's stupid attempt since introducing Messenger V. 7.0 to block "unsafe" file extensions from getting through.

I call it stupid because on the unsafe list are extensions... yes... lo and behold...
.jpg, .gif, .tif, .doc, .mp3 and many more that I can't seem to think actually warranted any blocking.

In any case, there are a number of patches available online... just google for "MSN File Extension Unblocker" or the "MSN Mess Patch".

Another simpler way to get around this problem would be to ask the sender to rename the file (including the extension) to say... "something.txt", and when you receive it on your end, rename it back to "something.mp3". This would work as well, but may be annoying if you have to do this everytime for file transfers.

Re: MSN Messenger - problems receiving audio files

Just zip the song ...

Re: MSN Messenger - problems receiving audio files

The easiest solution to this is click "accept" when the file (song) is sent to you and dont open directly when it says successfully completed, go to the My Received folder in My Documents, and drag and drop it in the media player which ever you use it

and yeah this stupid error is caused by that Win-firewall and msn collab thingie
