I have been thinking on this issue for quite sometime, but couldn’t resist sharing it today.
Not sure about the IK tag but he has shown great leadership skills already in the ODI'S. In the 2nd Test he was brilliant, knew exactly when to rotate his bowlers. He should be given the Test captaincy also. kumble should step down and possibly retire. Mishra and Chawla are good enough back up options.
He will definetely become the captain once Kumble retires.
He is a captain even before Kumble has retired. Kumble had to fake injury for face saving ...reminds me of Shoaib Akhtar doing "head and shoulders, knees and toes" after getting smashed all around the ground :)

Dhoni can hardly touch the status of Imran Khan as the latter was in a different league altogether. But Dhoni being Dhoni, he has done very well as a captain in ODI's and as a stand-in in tests. I don't know if India would have won or won with this big of a margin had Kumble not sat out, but I don't believe Kumble have failed yet, so retaining him as a captain for this series and not make any drastic change would be one of the thoughts. As you put it, Dhoni has led by example and he is tipped to be the captain for both formats of the game permanently, which India can hope to gain much out of.
just couple of days ago i was having this conversation with my brother and we were discussing that how is indian cricket going to be different in absance of VVS, sachin,SG and RD, knowing that it is going to be a big change but one thing that makes indian cricket future real bright is having a captain like MSD. He has really shown un believable maturity in last one year as captain and i dont think he has gotten as much recognition as he deserves as the team still has seniors and they end up being in news, which i think is a good think for MSD, as it means that his successes have not gotten into his head and he can still be more productive.
MSD has shown a lot of maturity in his batting in i noticed it during the Tri series in AUS, ODI game vs SL when he hit didnt hit any 4 in his 50 to win the game for side (Cricinfo - 8th Match: India v Sri Lanka at Adelaide, Feb 19, 2008) was the best example of play who has realized what his responsibilities are and the one who is willing to curb his natural game in order to do the job for his country. ( Expect that from afridi…we all wish!!!.)
Overall, in begining i didnt used to like the guy because of his batting and over hyped keeping, but i am a convert now and i am in changing in to a big MSD fan as cricketer and believe that he can take cricket india places.
