Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the U.S. need not preach to India on human rights in the wake of its concerns on this issue in his State as reflected in leaked diplomatic cables from an American Consul, accessed by *The Hindu *through WikiLeaks.
Mr. Modi at the same time noted that the cables had also spoken of him being “incorruptible” and Gujarat being a “progressive” State.
He also said that the Central government should address the issue of U.S. “interference” in the internal affairs of India.
“(Michael) Owen had discussed Gujarat..I looked into his eyes and said America should not give us advice on human rights,” Mr. Modi recalled. Michael. S. Owen was U.S. Consul General in Mumbai when he had a meeting with Mr. Modi in 2006.
“This America should not give us advice on human rights. I am son of India and I know what human rights violations you have done. Good that dialogue is faithfully reproduced,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

US had revoked his B1/B2 visa. I wonder what they will do if he becomes PM one day....
Not allow him to come to the US on a state visit ??
that is one decision that the US must be regretting severely! numerous US based companies have been seeking Modi's appointment and investing in Gujarath!

Modi was INVITED by the US based Indian-origin association I think.
Yes, and thats why he had a applied for a diplomat visa which was denied. But he already had a tourist/business visa which was revoked.
Based on the wikileaks expose' the US ambassador Michael S. Owen had written to the state dept that the US might have to reassess the Gujarat chief minister. It will be interesting to see how that US reacts if Modi is part of the central govt.

I doubt if Modi can ever be part of central leadership. He has the skills to be the PM of India but he has to put to bed the (what I think is unfair) perceptions of his handling of the riots. It's a shame we have to put up with the useless MMS when when we have people like Modi

The perception issue is alive only because Congress is keeping it alive for political gains. Even Gujarat Muslims have moved past 2002, and have voted him back twice after that. I hope the next general elections see the end of the Congress led govt.

the quadrocci release, the 2G spectrum scandal, adarsh scandal, the sat spectrum scandal....these are scandals that in any normal society should be more than enough to throw the bums out. we'll see if the Indians are any better in 2012 in throwing the bums out or not.

Add to that the Commonwealth Games scam, cash for votes scam etc. and there is more than enough reason to vote the Congress out.
