Re: MQM’s Saulat Mirza is set to be executed on Mar. 19th - Postponed [UPDATED]
Errr no!
All he needs to do is to repeat his confession in front of the Magistrate, and only then his confession will hold any legal weight. His confession itself is a piece of evidence! Hence the decision to postpone his execution in order to make the most of his confession in legal terms.
The onus is not on him to provide any ‘credible evidence’. He’s just confessing and giving as much information as he possibly can about some of serious crimes he had committed along with the help of others. It is part of police, prosecution and other investigating agencies to utilise his confession to help find credible evidence against Altaf Hussain, and present it in front of the court. This is how the legal system works!
I think most people are quite ignorant about the fact how seriously inclusive confessions/witness statements/testimonies are taken in the real court rooms. They may not be the sole criteria to prosecute anyone, but they are still an integral part of police investigation and prosecution.
