Apparently even UNHCR and Amnesty International have accused MQM of committting terrorist acts, smuggling, inciting violence they donot include it on their official list of terrorist organisation since it doesnt hurt the western interests. Now my question is why as pakistani we fail to deal with this naked aggression? What perplexes me is that many people who acknowledge the violent nature of this organistion but since it has benefited us in certain quarters so it deserves a fair go. Currently there is thread going on about the wonders of Mustafa Kamal, may be has done things that have benefited people but lets not forget he comes rolled in a package of MQM and even Hitler was benefiting certain people. Some people donate overcome by the feeling of helping mohajirs, i would implore the sincere people to research well about this criminal organistion that takes hard earned money and has no qualms about using it to damage pakistan merely to serve their own agenda. In my view you do not have an accurate understanding of what is going on in Karachi for the Past 25-30 years...., while it is certainly true that this Party is a Mafianso..., but every Tom, Dick & Harry is loaded with weapons in Karachi... MQM is not the only but one of such element(just that it is the largest) & all these goons have political affiliations , We have pushtoon goons (big in land-mafia,much much bigger then MQM in drugs), we have Sunni Tehrik, Jamiat, JSQM & these days the most favored goons are the Liyari Gangs, where the infamous Rehmen Dacoit is now the honorable Sardar Abdur-Rehman. We have the most curropt & disgraceful police force in the whole of Pakistan, ppl prefer their local 'bhai' to the police. state as an entity is non-existent..., when it is a matter of settling business disputes..., enforcing debit/creditor relationships etc. etc.... these are the people that come to fill this void.
Trust me i say this without any ethinic bias..., most businessmen while in principle would want to live in a society without any Mafianso or gangs , but in reality since it cant happen so they have to align themselves to some for their own survival..., & their preffered group amongst all these is MQM..., you know the reason why ? Because it is the most well organized & professional outfit with an appropriate command & control structure. MQM has realized this in the last decade that more money, power & influence can be gained by doing this mafia stuff in a professional & organized way..., making them more 'business' acceptable this is the reason its not just informal business but big business like Banks etc. that now use them for Repossions & loan default handling cases.
Karachi in this day is like 5 points Newyork of the 1840's, I have no intentions of justifying them ... all I am saying is that they are a product of the changes karachi experienced during the Afghan war..., had it not been them some one else would have been doing what they are doing...

you have summed up all this very well..MQM was actually crushed very well in the 90's by the Army and Co operation. However the maniac Musharaf gave them free hand in order to get their support to stabilize his own govt. Else, crime rate was low. bhata khori and mobile snatching was very less. but since Musharaf's free hand the goons came out and I believe that now they are uncontrollable, since Mr Zardari also relies on MQM support.

although i have no regards or sympathy for MQM but it is not just one entity which does or had done evil in the past....

i dont think the purpose of this thread is to conclude we have only one problem on our hands. Rather a specific problem that has been going on for a number of years now, that politicians cut deals with in order of short term gain and the entire nation than later on compensates . I feel pakistanis have memory of goldfish and they keep repeating the same pattern over an over again.
Why should it be considered harsh to call a problem exactly that- a menacing problem. I already mentioned the thread about exalted mayor of karachi was the reason why i put this up.

my brother lives in karachi and he has mentioned pretty much the same things that stochastic said. its an organised mafia with a seat in parliament. thats why i think democracy is a failure in our land of pak. people donot use the one thing they can against these people. though as per my brother there isnt much of voting happening in karachi thanks to the same organisation.

last time i checked we were talking about MQM, on the other had, Jamat-ul-dawa and other organizations have been declared Terrorists organizations. You want MQM to be decleared a terrorist organization to collect More donations?
Donations are referred to as 'bhatta' by MQM. This bhatta doesnt just trickle all the way to the top of the command of the terrorist outfit, because Bhai will kill anyone who tries to get a scoop out of it. Its funny how closet MQM supporters have no answer to the fact that even the UNHCR has dubbed this organization as a terror league, and they have to bring in Pashtuns and peopliyaz to somehow justify the claim.
