MQM Legislators Should Resign and Seek Fresh Mendate

AH is rightly demanding from his mqm legislators to seek fresh mandate as they are elected in the name of AH. They should resign en-block and seek re-elections if they think they are truly representing muhajir of Karachi, Hyderabad and Mirpur Khas.

MQM legislators pay little heed to audio clip appeal for resignations - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

KARACHI: Amid scepticism about the authenticity of an audio clip posted on the social media on Friday exactly a month after the incendiary speech of London-based Muttahida Qaumi Movement supremo Altaf Hussain, MQM lawmakers were asked to tender mass resignations and seek a fresh mandate though the recording failed to get any serious response from the parliamentarians who say they no longer recognise him as their leader.

Unlike August 2015 when MQM lawmakers had resigned from the National Assembly, the Senate and the Sindh Assembly on one call of Mr Hussain, none of the elected parliamentarians submitted their resignation on Friday.

The two-minute-and-twenty-six-second audio clip posted by senior London-based party leaders on the social media stirred a controversy within the party before coming under scrutiny by opponents and critics. MQM lawmaker Irum Azeem Farooque questioned the authenticity of the audio when she tweeted: “Those who have heard AltafBhai know it’s not his voice recording.”

In another tweet, she said: “Tell him [Mustafa Azizabadi] if I am wrong why doesn’t he bring Altaf Bhai on Skype right now.” In yet another tweet, she said: “Horns at the background. In London it’s a crime to keep honking horns at this time. Liaqatabad ke bus ka horn tu chup Kara do Azizabadi [Azizabadi, please stop this horn of Liaquatabad bus].”

The tweets attracted strong reaction from Wasay Jalil who insisted on its originality and called the attempts to prove Mr Hussain’s audio message fake part of propaganda. “Haha on those who propagating on fake Altaf Bhai’s audio msg [messages]. Feel shame on that day when vdo msg will come. Same propaganda was done in March. The audio message of Altaf Bhai is 100% genuine & shame on those who are propagating its fake,” he tweeted.

Muttahida lawmakers in the Sindh Assembly and the National Assembly have been following the Dr Farooq Sattar-led MQM-Pakistan since the senior leader dissociated himself and the MQM-Pakistan from Mr Hussain and his London secretariat on Aug 23 a day after the controversial speech.

Despite being pressured by the London leadership, even those MQM lawmakers who were not present in Pakistan did not send their resignations to the speaker of the national and provincial assemblies or the chairman of the Senate.

In the audio message, Karachi and Hyderabad mayors, deputy mayors, chairmen of the Mirpurkhas municipal committee and other local government elected representatives have not been asked to submit their resignations.

In the audio message, Mr Hussain purportedly says he supported the Dr Sattar-led MQM for the sake of unity but he did not know about the conspiracy under which his own name was omitted from the party constitution.

“This is totally unconstitutional and dictatorial. I don’t recognise this decision…So I have given all powers to convener Nadeem Nusrat,” he says, referring to a recent decision through which the MQM coordination committee convener — who was expelled from his post by the MQM-Pakistan — dissolved the coordination committee and party’s organisational structure.

“I ask all MNAs, MPAs, senators that they know and the people also know that they got votes [in the election] in whose name. When they get votes in Altaf Hussain’s name then they should contest election again and immediately submit their resignations,” he appears to say in the audio message.

He can be heard asking his followers to remain steadfast and united. He says that if anyone is facing immense problems then they should either go into hiding or leave the country instead of “selling their conscious and betraying the blood of the martyrs” like many people did.

On Friday, Leader of the Opposition in the Sindh Assembly Khawaja Izharul Hassan told the media that the MQM parliamentarians got the mandate from those who said “Long Live Pakistan” and “we will not resign on someone’s wish or for his satisfaction”.

Except MNA Sufyan Yusuf who a couple of days back had tweeted from abroad that the mandate belonged to Mr Hussain and he would soon resign from the assembly, no other parliamentarian submitted his or her resignation on Friday.

A senior London-based leader told Dawn that Mr Hussain’s audio statement was only for “Haq Parast” people and party loyalists, as “we do not expect en masse resignations”. However, he said some of the lawmakers would definitely announce their resignations “whenever they get a chance”.

Interesting. So Wasim Akhtar still supports AH and accepts him as his leader. No doubt he won the elections in the name of AH.

London-based Muttahida leader seeks immediate release of Karachi mayor - Newspaper - DAWN.COM

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Move*ment leadership in London, which has been found in disagreement with MQM Pakistan over different issues since the Aug 22 speech of Altaf Hussain, demanded immediate release of city mayor and senior party leader Wasim Akhtar.

In a statement issued on Saturday, MQM-London leader Nadeem Nusrat demanded that the government release the elected mayor so he could serve Karachi and take up municipal challenges of the country’s largest city.

“We all know that fake cases were registered against Waseem Akhtar on a political basis,” he said.

“The Karachi mayor is being targeted only for his political association. Due to his fair and honest political stand, the city is being victimised and deprived of all municipal developments.” Meanwhile, an antiterrorism court on Saturday deferred the pronouncement of its order on the bail application of city mayor Waseem Akhtar in three cases related to the May 12 carnage.

The ATC, which had earlier fixed the pronouncement of order for Saturday, would pronounce it on Sept 29.

The mayor had earlier obtained protective bail in all these cases from the Sindh High Court. He had moved his bail application after the final charge sheets against him and others before the administrative judge of the antiterrorism courts which assigned the trial of the accused persons to the ATC.

The Airport police filed the charge sheet in the cases before the judge and submitted that as many as 15 accused persons, including the city mayor, Mohammad Aslam alias Kala, Anwarul Hasan, Faisal Wahab, Azhar Quershi and Mohammed Hanif, were arrested in the case, while 16 others including Shujaat Ali Hashmi and Umair Hassan Siddiqui were absconding.

According to the charge sheet, accused Waseem Akhtar had confessed to his involvement in the cases during the course of interrogation. The charge sheet said that on his lead, accused Aslam alias Kala was arrested.

Earlier, his counsel Barrister Khawaja Naveed forwarded his arguments in the bail applications in four cases against Mr Akhtar before the ATC.

ATC defers order on Waseem Akhtar’s bail plea in May 12 carnage cases till 29th
He contended that Mr Akhtar was not named in any of the FIRs, nor was he assigned any specific role in the cases. Besides, the counsel added, nothing was recovered from his client.

He asked the court to grant him bail and order his release accordingly.

Custodial death case

Meanwhile, jail authorities submitted a report in an ATC on the death of a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in custody on Aug 28.

The report said that Mehmood Khan was a diabetic patient and died because a wound in his leg worsened.

The MQM worker, a fire brigade department employee, was booked in as many as seven cases pertaining to May 12, 2007 riots and possessing illicit weapons registered at the Airport and Surjani Town police stations.

The report said the suspect was admitted to a government hospital on Aug 25, but three days later he died during his treatment.

The jail authorities also asked the court to remove Khan’s name from the cases he was implicated in, as a formality to maintain the prosecution data.

The judge after approving the report, summoned the investigation officer of the case to submit his comments on Oct 5.

Khan was arrested on Aug 22 following an attack of the MQM workers on two media houses.

Zahra Shahid murder case

An ATC again summoned the driver of slain Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leader Zahra Shahid Hussain to record his testimony as an eyewitness.

The PTI leader was shot dead outside her residence in Defence Housing Authority on May 18, 2013.

The ATC judge issued notices to the driver again after he failed to ensure his presence despite being put on notice to appear in court.

The judge warned that if he did not make it to the court on next hearing, non-bailable warrants would be issued for procuring his attendance in the court.

The driver is stated to have witnessed the killing as he was at the crime scene when some assailants disembarked their motorcycles and shot at Ms Hussain while she was sitting in her car at the doorstep of her house.

Four suspects, namely Zahid Abbas Zaidi, Rashid alias Tailor, Kaleemullah and Irfan alias Lamba, were indicted in June 2015 after the police submitted a charge-sheet against them.

According to the charge-sheet, the arrested suspects in collusion of their absconding accomplices, Junaid Bukhari, Tariq Nawaz and Asif alias Ganja, made plot of the killing and executed the same.

The prosecution cited as many as 20 witnesses including the victim’s driver.

MQM’s London leadership ‘sacks’ Farooq Sattar - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

LONDON: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM)’s London-based leadership on Sunday announced the expulsion of MQM Pakistan leader Dr Farooq Sattar from the party in a statement shared by MQM leader Wasay Jalil.

Wasay Jalil, and party leaders Mustafa Azizabadi, Qasim Ali Raza and Muhammad Ishfaq in a joint statement released by the party’s London secretariat, announced that Dr Sattar had been expelled from the party due to “repeated betrayals to the party and the supreme leadership”.

“Nadeem Nusrat, no one except him, is the elected convener of Muttahida Qaumi Movement and Farooq Sattar has been removed from basic party membership,” said the statement.

The joint statement added that the MQM’s Coordination Committee had appointed Dr. Sattar as parliamentary leader after the approval of party chief Altaf Hussain as per the constitution and laws of the party. Dr. Sattar was not authorised to impose his decision on the party and other affairs, it added.

“Dr. Sattar committed treason time and again and managed to return to his earlier-held positions in the party due to the kindheartedness of Altaf Hussain.”

“Today, all workers of MQM are informed that Farooq Sattar has been sacked from the party for repeatedly betraying and dealing with establishment on the cost of the blood of Haqparast workers,” said the statement.

The statement further said that Dr. Sattar was not a parliamentary leader of the MQM any longer, so all legislators were free to submit their resignations.

The statement warned that disciplinary action and a social boycott would be imposed on those defying party orders.

The joint statement went on to say that on several occasions, party workers have given the right to take all sensitive decisions to Altaf Hussain. The party’s London secretariat also directed party activists to believe only the statements of Nadeem Nusrat, which it claimed were affirmed by Altaf Hussain.

Farooq Sattar in August sidelined MQM supremo Altaf Hussain after an anti-Pakistan rant which was followed by an attack on the ARY News office. The MQM’s London leadership has rejected the minus-Altaf formula, asserting that Altaf is still the party’s uncontested chief.

Nadeem Nusrat on Saturday asked all leaders and workers of the party to submit an apology for deserting Altaf Hussain for any reason and for joining him again.

The “appeal” came a week after emergence of an audio message on the social media in which Altaf Hussain was heard asking MQM legislators to resign from their seats and contest elections afresh since they got votes in his name.

Not a single MQM legislator — now part of Dr Farooq Sattar-led MQM-Pakistan — has so far sent his/her resignation to the Senate and national or provincial assemblies.

The Sattar-led MQM had recently sacked Nadeem Nusrat and three others from the coordination committee.

In a tit-for-tat reaction, Nusrat had dissolved the coordination committee and all organisational structure of the MQM on the instruction of Altaf Hussain, who also gave him powers to reorganise the party.

In a reaction to Nusrat’s statement, Dr Sattar appointed himself the convener of the party and expelled two members of the coordination committee — Ashraf Noor and Akram Qureshi — from the party to firm up his grip on the party’s organisational affairs.

He told a press conference in the evening that besides senior deputy convener Amir Khan, Kahfulwara, Nasreen Jalil and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui were made deputy conveners, while Faisal Subz*wari, Abdul Waseem and Kishwar Zehra appointed members of the coordination committee.

In September, MQM leaders in the Sindh Assembly were also among lawmakers who unanimously passed a joint resolution seeking a treason case against those responsible for anti-Pakistan slogans, hate speech and subsequent violence on Aug 22.

The move followed the removal of Altaf’s London-based coterie from the top decision-making forum of the party by MQM Pakistan.

Altaf releases video, asks MQM legislators to resign - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

KARACHI: Accusing Dr Farooq Sattar-led MQM-Pakistan of betraying him, Muttahida Qaumi Move*ment founder Altaf Hussain on Thursday warned lawmakers belonging to his party that their constituents would ensure their resignations if they did not quit assemblies on his call.

About two weeks ago, Mr Hussain in an audio message posted on the social media had asked the MQM’s parliamentarians to resign and contest elections afresh since they had been elected “in his name”.

However, questions had been raised about the authenticity of the audio clip and the London-based MQM leadership had promised to release Mr Hussain’s video statement to give a befitting reply to all detractors.

On Thursday, the MQM-London posted on YouTube and Daily Motion an 81-minute-long clip in which Mr Hussain was seen speaking to his followers for about 42 minutes.

The remaining part of the clip only contained Mr Hussain’s voice.

**He told his followers that there should be no confusion about those sitting in what he called “the PIB camp” — the residence of Dr Sattar which is nowadays the temporary headquarters of the MQM-Pakistan — that they had deceived him by writing him out of the MQM’s constitution.

“From now on, none of my followers will contact anyone except [MQM] London and Nadeem Nusrat,” he said, adding: “Soon the coordination committee in Pakistan and London will be announced.”

He said the coordination committee in Pakistan was taking decisions which “are not in the interest of the nation”.

While not a single lawmaker had paid any heed to his earlier call to resign, he once again asked the parliamentarians belonging to his party to send their resignations to the assemblies and the Senate by Friday.
**
**He said the voters would force their representatives in the National Assembly, the Sindh Assembly and the Senate to submit their resignations and contest election independently. “I will accept them if they return to the assemblies,” he added.
**
Referring to his Aug 22 incendiary speech, he said he was overwhelmed by emotions because of “enforced disappearance and extrajudicial killings” of his workers when he said “down with Pakistan”.

“I realised my mistake and offered my apology twice.”

Mr Hussain said that no action was taken against other leaders when they spoke against the country or the armed forces of Pakistan.

The London-based leader said he knew that the operation launched under the National Action Plan would only target his party and therefore his party refused to sign the Protection of Pakistan Bill in 2014.

The MQM-Pakistan, meanwhile, offered no reaction to Mr Hussain’s statement and a senior leader said no lawmaker would submit his/her resignation.
