I don't know the extent of these raids but at this moment it looks like MQM is being over reactive. It probably is afraid of a full fledged operation against itself and may be this is why it is creating this hue and cry pre-emptively.
In general, these raids on criminal elements in the city appear to helpful in reducing terrorist activities.
Only yesterday, they defused a bomb which was setup in Gulzar e Habib mosque, which belonged to Barelvi Ahle Sunnat (not ASWJ organization).

That is exactly what enemies of Karachi would wish for. They don't care about suffering of people from Karachi.

Well, law and order problem in Karachi can be sorted out only in one way, that is, police should be local and has interest in implementing law and order.
At present, Karachi has around 92 police stations and out of that I believe only 3 are headed by someone from those permanently settled in Karachi (I think, Shehla Raza also claimed that in one of TV program). Most of the rest are from Punjab, though there are substantial number from KPK and some from interior Sindh too. Most of them have their extended family outside Karachi and when retire leave Karachi.
Even if one look at police force, more than 90 percent are from Punjab and KPK and rest are mostly from interior Sindh (handful from those who permanently settled in Karachi). This situation one could not find anywhere in the world, neither anywhere in Pakistan.
So, it is obvious that police is not interested in good law and order situation of Karachi. Only interest of Karachi police is extorting money and persecuting local population if they get any chance.
It seems, Karachi permanent residents are occupied population, ruled by Masters from outside Karachi. So, how can you expect a better law and order situation in Karachi?
Just like anywhere in Pakistan, Karachi should have local police, manned by people whose extended family live in Karachi and they would retire in Karachi too, so that law and order situation in Karachi affect personals of these police force directly, and then you will see that law and order situation in Karachi would improve substantially, for all.

Well, what I know is that a Shia militant group was and probably even active today is doing targeted Killing of some prominent activists belonging to Deobandi sect who were killing Shias (as well as Sunnis), that is all.
As for relationship between Shia and Sunni (Berelvi), then (in 90s), earlier than 90s, as well as today, both communities were not only living together peacefully but were taking part together in most religious related events, such as Eid-e-Milad-ul-Nabi and Muharram (both events I mentioned do not belong to Shia or Sunni, but to both Shia and Sunni).
Actually, both Shias and Sunnis are getting targeted with bombs and Suicide attack in Mosques and other religious gatherings by terrorists groups belonging to Deobandi sect, calling one (Shia) Kafir and other (Sunni) Biddati ... something that has not decreased but increased after 9/11, once Taliban (another Deobandi outfit) joined in.
What I know, most bomb and Suicide attacks by these terrorists on mass gathering of Shias and Sunnis happened after 9/11, not in 90s ... as before 9/11 when Taliban elements did not joined in, most attacks by these Kharjee terrorists in Pakistan were target killings.

I swear by God that I don't remember a SINGLE incident when any shia or Sunni Barelvi did indiscriminate firing on ANY gathering of people (not just mosques).
Sectarian killings from some Shia groups like SMP were targeted killings of people they thought were responsible for massacre of innocent people.
It is difficult to stop a Hazara guy to be patient and not go after the killers when he lost several of his family members at their hands. We cannot expect rational decisions for him.

I am not sure about the composition of Karachi police. If the percentage of police men from the locals is lower, it should be increased but most important is depoliticisation of the security apparatus which is powerful enough totals action against subversive elements. This thread is an example how political players of Karachi interfere in the security of the city.
