MQM and PPP Part ways

Just watched MQM press conference where Farooq Sattar announced that their alliance with PPP has ended and they will sit on opposition benches in both the centre and Sindh.

The biggest issue apparently was the appointment of new IG Sindh which MQM was not in favour of.

MQM decides to join opposition

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement has decided in principle to sit on the opposition benches.

According to Geo News sources, MQM has decided to join opposition in center and province and MQM Raabta Committee has completed process of consultations in this regard. Sources said the decision to appoint Shoaib Suddle as new IG Police Sindh was one of the reasons for this decision…

interesting.. so it begins.. :chai:

Re: MQM and PPP Part ways

Mustaqil Qoumi Museebat will remain Mustaqil Qoumi Museebat.

Now that they are in opposition, the years I have spent in Karachi when they were in opposition, I can safely say but pray otherwise that 'Karachi kaa sukoon ghaarat huaa hee huaa' .... and on top of that, IG say panga.. hmmm...

Sooner or later this was expected. Sooner the better. Timing seemed to be calculated. Most probably judges will be reinstated soon as per follwoing news.

Plan to reinstate judges soon after NA resolution

In addition to this CM Sindh is going to probe in to April 9, 2008 massacre. Both news are not in favor of Mush. Mush as usual use MQM nuisance to topple the democracy.

But I think PPP, PML(N) and ANP should not be black mailed. If MQM wants to sit in opposition, it is there prerogative. Past history showed that their coalition never worked any way. The only problem the present government will face disturbances create by these goons and make life miserable in Karachi and Hyderabad. It is now people of Pakistan has to decide whether they want this nuisance to continue or Naseerullah Babar be appointed as Sindh Governor.

Re: MQM and PPP Part ways

Shoaib Suddle hmmmm.. NOW that I remember and if I remember correctly, was the person some time back who gave really hard time to MQM by killing its members.... so, no wonder... it means the panga was there to begin with.

Re: MQM and PPP Part ways

^The famous operation against MQM in the 90s was conducted under his command, he was the Deputy Inspector General of Police then. He has a Ph.D in criminology.

Re: MQM and PPP Part ways

Suddle to go after mafias in Karachi

ISLAMABAD: Asif Ali Zardari has picked up brave and reputed but controversial Dr Shoaib Suddle as the new Sindh IG Police, a decision that may rock the ongoing PPP-MQM reconciliatory moves. But it clearly conveys a bold message to all and sundry that politics and terrorism would be dealt with separately as far as the province is concerned.

In what is seen as a related development, the government has appointed a new Director General IB Tariq Lodhi, who too had served in Karachi and other parts of Sindh during the mid-90s.

The appointment of Dr Suddle, who while being the DIG Karachi had led the police operation in Karachi during Benazir Bhutto’s second tenure, clearly shows Zardari’s intention that he means business as far as the law and order situation in Karachi is concerned. The federal government has formally notified Suddle’s appointment besides promoting him to BS-22.

Sources said Zardari, after being extremely disturbed by the April 9 massacre of 14 innocent people in Karachi, decided to bet on Suddle, who knows Karachi in and out. He was the DIG Karachi from June 1995 till Nov 1996 when the Benazir government was removed.

According to PPP sources, the very next day of the April 9 massacre, Suddle was made to fly from Islamabad to Karachi to meet Zardari at the Bilawal House. Suddle was reluctant to accept the assignment for the reason that he was to retire in a few months time and also because of the fact that his working might spoil certain political negotiations being carried out by the PPP. However, Asif Ali Zardari, while setting his priorities right, expressed his resolve that he wanted peace in Karachi and would not compromise on this issue. The newly-appointed IG Sindh wanted to take over his new role in Karachi next week but was asked to immediately fly to the provincial capital.

A source in Islamabad quoted Suddle as saying that he would be leaving for Karachi without having any bias against any party or group. "I don't have personal enmity with anyone. My target would be only criminals irrespective of their influence and connections," Suddle was quoted as saying.

Suddle's appointment coincides with PPP-MQM ongoing parleys for a coalition government in Sindh. Analysts believe that such a coalition is must for peace in Karachi. The top police appointment has, however, made one thing clear that the PPP wants the cleansing of what used to be called the City of Lights from terrorist mafias.

I think zardari is making some good decisions, lets hope and pray that things change for the betterment of the country.

Re: MQM and PPP Part ways

This may also be a camouflage by MQM. Why they object to a police head whose only concern is maintaining law and order in Karachi? It does not make any sense, unless MQM is heavily involved in criminal activties in Karachi. Perhaps they have grudge about allocation of ministries. Read the following news:

KARACHI: ‘Quibbles over ministries behind MQM’s decision’

By Qasim A. Moini
KARACHI, April 13: The Pakistan People’s Party considers the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s decision to sit on the opposition benches in the Sindh Assembly “not only surprising, but shocking.”

Talking to Dawn on Sunday, Pir Mazharul Haq, the PPP’s parliamentary leader in the Sindh Assembly and a senior minister in the provincial cabinet, said that up till Saturday night, deliberations were continuing with the MQM and the announcement by the party on Sunday evening to join the opposition had caught the PPP by surprise.

He said it appeared the MQM’s decision came about over not getting the ministries of their choice.

“Our delegations had met last night and we even dined together. They had given us a proposal, and we had given them a counter-proposal. We had indicated to them our reservations about their relationship with ‘others’. We were actually waiting for their call,” he said.

When asked if by ‘others’ he meant Arbab Rahim and the PML-Q, Pir Mazhar applied in the affirmative.

As for the MQM’s qualms about Shoaib Suddle’s appointment as inspector-general of Sindh, Pir Mazhar said that during their deliberations, the MQM seemed fine with the choice.

“Shoaib Suddle is an officer. He’s a bureaucrat. He’s a well-reputed and clean man. Dr Zulfiqar Mirza had convinced them (the MQM). They were more than satisfied,” he claimed.

“We told them they had to decide who they wanted to sit with. They are the ones who appeared to be non-serious. We, too, have coalition partners, and they have their reservations. We asked them what kind of message the April 9 incident sent. We also reminded them that Arbab Rahim had, in the past, made some uncharitable remarks about the MQM,” added Pir Mazhar.

However, he indicated that even after this decision, the doors were open for the MQM.

“We are very serious about the reconciliation process. We even want to take along the parties that are not in the assembly. We are under no compulsion.

It would have been better if the MQM would have stayed with us. I would advise them, in the larger interest of Sindh, that reconciliation is more important than ministries. We want to promote brotherhood. We will still try. Nothing is final in politics,” said the Pir.
