MQM and GaRhi Urdu

A few days back, I was listening to Farooq Sattar and he used chun chun ke difficult Urdu words and I’m sure most of the people present there might needed Feroz ul Lughaat…

‘ye amr iss cheez ki ghammazi karta hai’ :hayaa: Heard this word after a long long time, probably last heard it in Qasim Jalali’s historical dramas.

Now, Janab Altaf Hussain Bhai ( this way of addressing reminds me Hazrat Molana Fazl u Rehman Dieslwi… Allah kare jald Rehmatullah Ho jae) come up with this statement:

Aik Ayyar o Fateen shaks ne mujh per ilzamat lagae… pehle to mujhe Qasmi saheb ki ye ghazal yaad aai… Urmila ki waja se…

Then I started thinking what does ‘Fateen’ means? Isn’t it used in positive way ’ Zaheen o Fateen’, ‘Zahanat o Fataanat’? Ayyar o Fateen jacha nahin kuch :hmmm:

Re: MQM and GaRhi Urdu

'Ghammazi' is quite a common word in Urdu. I don't think there is anything "garrha" about it. Just type "غمازی" on google and see how many results from newspapers come up.

Besides, most MQM folks are university graduates. They are supposed to know both English and Urdu better than people like Jamshed Dasti, who have fake graduation degrees.

BTW, people from Punjab know Urdu equal or better than many Karachiites. I read somewhere that there are more Urdu books published from Lahore than from Karachi.

Re: MQM and GaRhi Urdu

you are right that number of publishing houses are more in Lahore than in Karachi.

but the word ghammazi is rarely used in conversation. Farooq Sattar tries to use gaaRhi Urdu and its good that MQM got educated people like Faisal sabzwari. I like his style of conversation.

BTW what is the meaning of Fateen? I've a doubt that Jang probably mus-spelled the word.

Re: MQM and GaRhi Urdu

Check any online dictionary to see the meaning of the word 'fatteen".
For example this one: Online Urdu Dictionary

Yes, ‘ghammazi’ is not an everyday word. I meant to say that it is common in literary language, or the newspaper language.

Re: MQM and GaRhi Urdu

Thanks for the link and this again proves that MQM leaders use words for which one need to refer to dictionary.

Re: MQM and GaRhi Urdu

khusk bakht shujaat can use more difficult words...No?

Re: MQM and GaRhi Urdu

She can use difficult words, but as she was associated with PTV and probably got some qualification in mass communication, she knows use of saless Urdu according to the audiences.

Re: MQM and GaRhi Urdu

After all she is the president of culture and literacy forum in her party.

Re: MQM and GaRhi Urdu

why being so apologist? We also live in Karachi and know the level of understanding of Urdu in common people.

We don't have any issue in usage of gaRhi Urdu by a party, we are actually appreciating it that in an era when we see not only common people but media people using a mixture of language (Urdu + English).
