I have moved many times . I never found it a traumatic experience because it was always for good and it was always something much better than the last. The first thing we do is find the nearest Masjid and Islamic Center and start participating in all the activities , lectures, volunteer work. That makes it possible to meet and hookup with some good people.
Oh last but not the least is try to go for praying namaz to the Masjid as many times as possible . You will meet and greet people there during various prayers too.

latest move was to this apartment.. and it wasnt a bad experience at all.. people tend to get a bit scared from all logistics point of view, but in the end, everything works out great..
personally, after moving first thing to look for was stores to get food/groceries from.. tim hortons/bus stop/police/ambulance etc, sketch the map of area to find out tricks/fastest routes to go places and come back .. (GTA is now over crowded in my opinion).. its futile, but always used to walk the area and mentally flag which houses/apartments arent inhabited by desis..
in buildings, spend a day with supervisors and manager, find out the busy timings for elevators (kids going to/from buses, morning shift leaving/coming, afternoon shift leaving/coming)
ACTUAL moving, loading offloading truck and transportation aspect, i think is the most simple.. its the after and before effects of it, finishing off with old place and streamlining the new one..
