My husband is completing his fifth year of surgical residency in NYC. He’s getting his interview dates for his fellowship programs in right now. The programs are scattered around various cities in US. We’ll find out in Nov. where he’s accepted (if at all). But it’s kind of scary to think that we’ll move in June 2005 to a new city with our kids. So far the possible contenders are Miami, Tampa, Orange County, Columbus OH, and Chicago. Personally I hope it’s California. I’ve heard that Miami, Tampa and Chicago suburbs are great places for families and kids. But does anyone know anything about Columbus? I’m usually a very spontaneous person who practically lives out of my suitcase but now with kid(s) I feel so cautious. I can’t imagine trying to settle in a new place that we’ll live in for only 2 years.
your kids would love orange county, especially if they are younger than 10 yrs of age. but then, kids that age are happy at any place, and memories of growing up in a cow town are probably more pleasant than growing up next to disneyland (maybe i'm just nuts).
four years ago, i'd had to choose between going to grad school in columbus vs. cali. i'd picked mostly based on weather and career exposure opportunities.
Orage County, CA is best for a Doctor and to raise a family.
It's also a very sexy tv series. :)

Yes, I'm familiar with the O.C. show. I wish we could go to California. But the situation is more complicated by the fact that we are matched. Meaning, he ranks, they rank and then one spot is given to him. We don't get a choice. So hopefully it works out. We find out in Nov. I'll post again about where we end up going.

yup, pretty much a hick-town but then again your hubby has no choice, if Columbus gets ranked for him, y'all will have to move there :D
Anyway, you mentioned Orange County, why just OC? And which hospital did he apply to in OC? There are three great surgery fellowship programs in the neighboring LA County:
UCLA Medical Center (ranked the best in the west several times)
LA County USC Medical Center (i know a friend there, an AKU graduate, doing residency in surgery dept)
Cedar-Sinai
Has he applied to any of these three? OC is a nice place to raise kids and all, make sure you buy the annual pass to Disneyland. They'll love it. Its also home some of the best beaches as well.
Columbus, Ohio is a quiet and peaceful place. It isn't as vibrant as Cincinnati (sp) or some places in California or New York for that matter. You'd find many Indians and Pakistani's, that is, quite a large desi community there. My two khalas live there and one just moved from Long Island, NY to Columbus for some strange reason. Infact, a colleague of mine left a month or so back for higher studies and chose Columbus, Ohio. I found life in karachi to be faster as compared Columbus. :p Khair, just my two cents. I 'll see if I can get more information on that.

Yup, the only draw-back I can think of for OC is that all your long-lost relatives from Pakistan will suddenly consider you their best friend and will flock to visit you. And if they are really annoying they will expect you to buy their DL tix too. So if you move to OC, do yourself a favor and take 5Abi's advice and get your family a season pass. You will save tonnes of money, atleast on your own tix.
Good luck to whereever you go.
^^ Faisal, I was planning on bringing the girls to disney land next year, knowing that you are my best friend, can you arrange for 5 passess....I will pay you when I get there.
Errr... sure, but I don't live in Southern Califonia. On your behalf, I can request 5Abi bhai jaan, though :-D
Ofcourse, when you visit Northern Califonia (SF, SJ), you are most welcome to stay at our place. :)

Unless you are arranging for some sort of package deal for the disney trip you don't need to get the passes ahead, you can get them the day you go to disney.

Actually he applied for a surgical oncology fellowship. so one hospital is OC and the other is Santa Monica (John Wayne). They're cancer hospitals so I'm not familiar with all the names.
