Moving to USA for study: Clothing Advice needed

Hello All,

I am 25 and female. I am moving to Chicago for my graduate studies next month. I am completely confused what kind of clothes I should buy for myself. My friends abroad advise me to not to buy anything from pakistan because that wont go with the fashion there but I want to buy clothes for me so that I may not go for shopping immediately after reaching there.

Can you guys please suggest good places in lahore for buying paints, T-shirts etc. I would appreciate if you please try to induce some decent graduate student fashion sense in me too  Please suggest me the university wearing clothes and places at lahore where i can buy them.

Thanks,

You should consider buying some good trousers, T-shirts, Abaya and some scarfs for a change. You'll find this stuff in all the good malls of lahore. Happy Shopping :)

When you are buying a new wardrobe you have to consider what you need. Split your wardrobe into professional (for work and maybe class) and recreational (for socializing, running errands etc). You need key pieces that can work for both professional and recreational, such as a great pair of trousers and well-fitted tees and button-down shirts that you can dress up or down. I'm not 100 % as to what is required of a graduate student appearance-wise but i'm guessing it's the same as for undergrad, though I would think sweatpants would be too childish :) And also, you're goign to a big city, wiht a diverse population, so i'm pretty sure you'll find everyone wearing everything, from salwar kameez to sweatpants to nikaab/abaya to miniskirts to trousers/jeans.

Now, I would advise you to buy your recreational stuff from Lahore. Things like chappals, kurtas, skirts, khussay, costume jewelry, shawls, even sneakers, you are better off buying froM Lahore since the desi stuff in US is expensive with limited selection. Those, you can go to Pace and Liberty. I noticed that Pace had nicer westernized clothes for guys than for girls, but you can definitely find nice skirts and kurtas and jewelry and chappals. I still say you'll find a larger selection of jeans and shirts and trousers when you get to Chicago but if you want, you can check out Chen One, La Senza, and Levi's; all these shops are located in Y-Block, Defense. I know LaSenza is a lingerie shop but you might be able to find teeshirts and sleepwear as well :)

Best of luck :)

assuming that you are not too traditional. I would suggest bringing some capris, skirts, kurta type tops, geeral cotton t's, pullovers etc. if u do get jeans from pak, dot et anything too crazy, general flared and straight legs types will work, dont get anything too light, thats kinda out these days.

If you need any help in Chicago please let me know. We are in Chicago and begum and I would be happy to do so.

This is how grad students dress when they party…very casual.

Look at the college brochure. They all have photos. Look at what the students are wearing.

Grad students do not have a fashion parade. We all dressed kind of nerdy.

When you start interviewing, or reading papers at conferences etc you will need a smart suit (skirt/ blouse/ Jacket or Pants/blouse/Jacket). It is best to buy interviewing clothes in the US.

Buy sweaters in Pakistan, but look for winter things when you get here… down coat, comforters, gloves etc.

For your leisure time, what you have in your wardrobe will definately be fine.

Do not go shopping crazy.. it makes no sense especially since as a grad student you will be spending 12 hours a day (at least you should) in the department!

Re: Moving to USA for study: Clothing Advice needed

depends on what program at what university. The story may be quite different between graduate math programs at central missouri state university and MBA programs at Chicago or Northwestern.

Re: Moving to USA for study: Clothing Advice needed

True, but the poster specifically asked regarding Chicago. Most grad programs in the Chicago area are sartorially casual. The specific university brochure will provide clues.
