I am thinking about moving to Karachi from the US. It may sound strange to some people lol. But anyway, I have been thinking about it for a while and now have begun planning about it. I haven’t been to Karachi in about 15 years. I have no idea what has changed. My distant relatives tell me that everything is “completely” different but fail to give any real details.
My question to you is, can you please share the major changes that you think have taken place in the past 5-10 years in Karachi?
What are the best/safest areas to live in Karachi? Are apartments hard to find? What is the price range for a 2 bedroom apartment (estimates are fine).
More importantly, what should I plan on bringing with me when I move? What do you think are some things I wont be able to buy when in Karachi so I should pack with me?
Also, any other tips/hints/information for a newbie would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much!
Wow.. I was in karachi in 09 and i visit every few years and its always changing the load shedding drives me mad.. Like inspiron said.. Maybe visit first? Last time i went some party leader got shot curfews in place, i duno for a break its fine permant living i dunoo, im frm the UK its totally diff out there compared to here
What would u be doin? Job? Do u have any close family there why the decision to move from US.. Anyway visit first.!! What if u hate it lol
lol wow ok i guess it's not so great there right now! I had the intention of working at a hospital. I do have family there but we're not really close so I have no idea what to expect. They make it sound like everything is fine over there. Back in the day, I used to live in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. We had loadshedding back then too but it seemed to be worse in other areas of Karachi.
Thank you for all the feedback. It really helps!
You should totally visit first and then take on the thought of being able to move here permanently or not. I say go for it. I know you're probably looking for detailed reviews about the place, something I'd love to do, but cant since I'm currently at work (cant risk a boot if know what I mean). Hopefully by the evening (PST) I'll share what I possibly could. Insha'Allah.
Exodus that's really nice of you! I would totally appreciate it! I've been trying to do so much research but information is limited about the real Karachi and not just tourism stuff. The main reason I want to move is because I feel there is a greater need for healthcare works in Karachi as compared to the Western countries, especially in the lower demographic people. But of course safety is important too. I'm very indecisive because of the lack of information out there!
My uncle and his family moved to Karachi last year and they currently reside in Gulistan e Jauhaur area. They said they haven't faced many problems and are enjoying it there.
My dad moved back and worked as a lecturer and surgeon in Baqi in 1993 along with our fam.
We returned in 1994 1 year later. My dad found the healthcare system too corrupt (main reason for the return) and I never settled back in to school infact that was a horrible year for me being the odd one out at school even though I went to a VERY nice school...

really? Do you mind if I ask in what way it's corrupt? This will greatly effect me since I plan to work in the healthcare system! School's not an issues since we're all grown now thank goodness. But yes, I know what you mean. When we went back there when I was a kid, I never liked the schools ( i had transfered around to find one that wasn't so bad. In the good schools, all the rich kids would treat me like crap and in the public schools the kids would treat me like I was a snob x_x.
But yes, I'm really interested in learning more about the healthcare system there. I've only heard good things about AKUH. I have no idea about any of the other hospitals except for what they show in movies which isn't reliable.
The main issue my dad came across was Bribery and crazy families who didnt understand why my dad wouldnt carry out certain procedures after an offer of money so he would lose patiens and then realise the other doctors would take on these cases for money even though the patient was at risk.
Other issues, bad attitude/lack of teamwork.
Halaat were kharab as they are now so there were lockdowns at the hospital every now and then due to gun crime.
Visit first and do an attachment maybe?, i tried a one day attachment for fun at Agha Khan as a medical student and I didn't fit in very well, what is normal teasing there is bullying to me. Thats just me though
Can I ask why on earth would you move to Pakistan/Khi?
well i'm from there... and i feel that with all the education I've received in the US, I can give back to those who are in real need and are surviving on a bare minimum. Not everything is about money to me. Yes, safety is important. But it's not like people don't live in Khi... it's totally populated. Don't get me wrong, I'm not being defensive or anything lol. I understand why people try to find opportunities to get out of there. But after spending 80% of my life here in the US, I still feel incredibly home sick because it's really not the same here. Maybe i'm just crazy :p

yikes... that sounds bad. Halaat are kharab right now too because of the election i think. All of it just sounds like so much drama too me compared to here x_x
And i had no idea you could do an attachment for a day! Hm, I might try that when I visit. I would NEVER have thought that there would be bullying in AKUH! Isn't it like one of the best hospitals? Wow... now I can just imagine how it would be in smaller/less popular places =(
oh and thank you for the details! This makes a huge difference!
i have a friend who moved back to Khi last year after living the past 20 years in the US....she's always had ties to the fashion/entertainment industry, so she cashed in those connections and is now an RJ...TV show host...model...acts in dramas..and does various hosting gigs...
It wasn't bullying it was heavy teasing which is normal for khi youth, which I was from there and had an excellent command of urdu and knew the slang would probably laugh off...however because I was a british girl well....it just reminded me of school.
