Moving to Alberta

My husband and I are considering a move to Alberta. Would anyone who lives there please give us an honest review on the economic situation there. Basically my husband is halfway through a job offer in Alberta and we can choose b/w Edmonton n Calgary and I’m also considering applying to various places for work. How is the odd job condition? Can I hope to land a job at the mall../ tims??

How is the rent/ amenities / cell phone bills as opposed to toronto? (and right now we live in Toronto)
My husband god laid off and we’re struggling to meet ends. Hence, the relocation outside of Ontario. Is it adviseable?? Or we should keep on trying our luck here. cuz we also know that the move itself would be pretty expensive, esp when only one of us would have a job.

Re: Moving to Alberta

**i'm in ontario too for the last 10 years. i wud suggest if u are economicallly struggling and u do NOT have folks in Alberta, better not move until ur husband gets the job especiallly in those hard economic times that we are going thru right now. most provinces have residency requirements b4 u can collect a dime from social services. rent is a big part of cost of living these days so initially u won't even qualify to have a subsidized housing. i wud strongly suggest that if you have kids, do NOT make a move until ur hubby secures a good job...

as far as your chances to land an odd job, its never too bad anywhere. it may take a few weeks but i'm sure u'll get a job, insha Allah ...

wish u and ur family all the best...aameen**

Re: Moving to Alberta

if at all possible, try to work out a short term solution with hubby moving to alberta and settling down. You and kids can stay in Toronto, for the time being.
Once your hubby is settled, then you can join him, say in 3 or 4 months time.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend a move to Alberta, unless its a really great job offer and you are pretty sure that this will result in a long term arrangement, where you will not be looking for another job within a period of 1 to 2 years, otherwise it will be extremely difficult because you will in a relatively "alien" environment, as compared to good old Ontario (Toronto to be precise)

I have been through this phase myself, I have family and kids, and I am also from toronto. We decided not to move to BC or Alberta (I had job offers from both places), but these were not long term career positions, so we stayed in Toronto, where eventually I was able to find work.

my 2 cents

Re: Moving to Alberta

Great piece of advice gentlemen. Yeah we thought all about it all over the weekend and it sounds like we dropped the plan anyways. We'd rather stay here and keep on trying. It'll happen when it's meant to.. otherwise there's always other survival jobs.

You're right when you say it'll be insane having to settle in a new place where we don't know anyone and moreover it's a freezer as opposed to T dot most of the year! And then not having family and friends plus going thru the emotional turmoil of having to find jobs/ doctors/ grocery stores and what not will be brutal. And since it would've been my husband's first time working for that company we weren't too sure if it would've been long-term employment.. say beyond 1-2 years. And also, we're too broke to rent hotels for a month or so for us to have decided, where to get a condo, not knowing anything of the market/ routes... I mean, yeah. Tons of ifs and buts, so we dropped the plan.

Re: Moving to Alberta

I agree to most of the suggestions but differ on one point. It all depends on what kind of job you desire or your profession. Like working in Silicon Valley is more suitable for an IT carrier while living in remote area could be good earner in natural resources / mining sector. Big giants operating there.... Alberta got plenty of opportunities...
